In his Clark, Mercer County, home, that's old enough to understand the anguish his parents have faced over whether Billie will lose her hourly $21.48 salary and family health benefits as an assistant manager of a state liquor store if the Legislature agrees to privatize the sale of wine and spirits stores as Gov. Tom Corbett wants.
His mom is now one step closer to losing her job.
After a four-hour hearing Monday, the House Liquor Control Committee voted 14-10 along party lines to end the state's 80-year-old monopoly on the sale of booze as the Republican governor proposed as part of his $28.4 billion spending plan for 2013-14. The full House is scheduled to vote on the bill Thursday, and, if approved, the bill would move to the Senate for consideration before going to Corbett.
The bill the committee adopted is not as grand as Corbett had wanted and its projected proceeds of a sale would be $200 million lower than the governor's $1 billion estimate. Corbett would spend the money on public education.

State store employees are allowed to offer wine suggestions now. They didn’t use to be.
As I recall we tried prohibition once. Rather not have the government tell anyone what to drink or what guns to own. Personal responsibility should govern both these things, and education about proper use and hazards should be taught in the schools just like driver training.

when my plethora of cousins ( who all grew up in Christian homes ) ask us what’s “different” about our family and why there’s not a single broken home or black sheep - could be many factors, and defintiely the Grace of God, for sure....
but no alcohol use by my folks, brothers, their wives, their kids, and ours is unique and part of our Family Covenant.
we’re not Mormon or any small group of believers, just our family conviction that has, we believe, been one factor to us to be sober and vigilant. Not a popular choice, but works for us.
And getting the state out of a business it has no business being in.
When I lived in Cincinnati, I encountered my first state liquor store. Surly help, awkward shopping, unpleasant retail experience.
Subsequently, I discovered that Kentucky retailers could actually deliver in Cincinnati. Somehow, commerce between Boone, Kenton and Campbell Counties, KY and Hamilton County, OH had been exempted from consideration as "interstate commerce" and the Kentucky retailers exported their product across the state line with impunity.
Will someone do an equally competent job in that position for fifteen dollars an hour and no benefits? She needs to show the private ownership to come that she is worth what she's been paid. Remember, a state store doesn't have to make a profit, unlike a private business.
This stuff helps 'em keep us drunk, stupid and easier to control. < /sarc >
Weed, on the other hand needs to be legalized because it keeps you stupid, psychotic and high, right?

I remember when I moved from Ohio to Indiana I was surprised you could go into most any beverage or food store and buy booze.
Forty year ago I was a security guard at the gigantic PA state liquor warehouse near the Philly airport.
Inside the warehouse was packed on pallets to the ceiling with every imaginable brand and description of booze, most of which I have never seen anywhere in my adult life.
Booze came in by railroad car on a siding in the back. Yup, railroad cars full of Johnny Walker, etc.
During the day and army of workers would pack full-sized truck trailers with a variety of spirits destined for particular state stores and lock up the trailers at the end of the day shift.
Overnight the loaded trailers would sit in the parking lot awaiting the day shift truck drivers with the tractors who would head out on their delivery route.
My job was to make rounds around the trailer parking lot and keep the loaded trailers from being hijacked in the wee hours of the morning. The subcontracting security company that hired me provided my with a loaded .38 for my shift that I would turn over to the next shift, but I had never had any training or certification on any firearm.
I wasn’t there long. I left there to begin my very interesting stint as a “correctional officer” at Graterford prison, a PA maximum security unit.
It's not your place or government's to violate adults' rights to protect other adults. And have you heard how many fatalities and messed-up lives resulted from our last attempt to ban alcohol?
Good for you. I personally like a glass if wine with dinner. And my life, family, & morals are just fine.
This article is about gov being in control of a “retail” market. Safe your sanctimonious crap for another thread.
Back in the 60’s & 70’s I can also recall the “Beer Distributor” in our small Pittsburgh suburb. It was like a drive-through garage where they sold beer and pop, and put it right into the trunk of your car for you.
Yes, we have some very sweet non-drinking families in our neighborhood. They’re dumb as can be, but very sweet.
to put in the tops of partially-empty soda bottles.
