News that the share of American homes with guns has been declining for four decades is best seen as a wake-up call to those who believe in the original principles of the American compact. The New York Times is fronting the news based on data from the General Social Survey, which is a data collection operation based at the Chicago University. The Times analysis of its data suggests that gun ownership has, as the Times puts it, fallen across a broad cross section of households since the early 1970s in cities and rural areas and all regions of the country. What it calls the household gun ownership rate has plunged to 34% in 2012 from more than 50% in the 1970s.
This plunge is a shocking and dangerous development in a nation whose system of government was framed on an understanding that widespread, private gun ownership was one of the struts of liberty. The dispatch in the Times, a shrewdly crafted scoop, notes that the findings contrast with the impression left by a flurry of news reports about people rushing to buy guns and clearing shop shelves of assault rifles after the massacre last year at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. It reckons the declining ownership rate suggests that even as the conversation on guns remains contentious...

In any event, the Times reports that the trend raises questions about the future politics of gun control. The way it poses the question is this: Will efforts to regulate guns eventually meet with less resistance if they are increasingly concentrated in fewer hands or more resistance? By our lights its a good question, one that invites a reconsideration of the strategy being pursued by those of us who believe that the Second Amendment is the palladium of our liberty...

Only when I'm shooting downhill.
LOL - nope, some Whoop A** and gator aid type stuff. All gone. >snif<
Here is a question, since “Ann” who calls me daily to help me with lower credit card bills, who responds to random phone calls?
Sigh
All mine just plumb disappeared one long weekend, several years ago.
Guess I just forgot where I left ‘em.
I do tend to believe it. New households, younger people who have been indoctrinated all their lives against guns and any bitter clinger symbols — many of these are urban apartment dwellers — sure I believe they aren’t buying guns. We all know counter examples, and people who have always had guns are buying more along with many new customers, but I do believe it.
Certain FReepers are also skeptical on the homo marriage polls. Believe it. These changes are really happening to society. The polls, although capable of exaggeration, bias and loaded questions, do tend to be right. They were on the election even as FReepers heavily criticized their oversampling of democrats. Turned out to be right on.
This rapid decline, quickening at a parabolic rate, is hard for many of us to take. But no sense in denying it is happening.
Plus the number of CHL’s has gone through the roof in recent years.
Let’s see....
315 Million people...X....34% = 107 Million + gun owners in America,
I doubt this should give anyone considering weapon confiscation, any comfort....
Especially since it’s likely a lowball number....
then again city populations are on the rise
I’m in a place like you are but most people aren’t.
Most those people I mentioned also have CHLs now too. Leftists have no idea what can of worms they will open if they try to ban guns. I predict a butt-kicking for them in the mid-terms unless the Repubs do something to shoot themselves in the feet again.
I’ll bet that a phone survey in Berlin in 1932 would have found many fewer Jewish households admitting that fact than a few decades earlier.
The poll is toro mierda, a libtard’s fever fantasy.
Always follow the money trail.
And in the last two months... (Dec. 2012 and Jan. 2013)
MOLON LAVE! ;-)
We need more stringent boat control laws...
I read recently, regarding the buying frenzy, that there was a gun sale every 1.5 seconds.
It’s probably slowed down a little...but only because there’s a shortage on guns...
“Ann...(heavy breathing) The calls are coming from within the house!!!”
Leave it to the idiot left media to report the exact opposite of truth, facts and reality.
