The House on Friday rejected a Democratic push to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10, shooting down one of President Obama’s priorities from his State of the Union speech.
The 233-184 defeat also exposed divisions within the Democratic Party. Where Mr. Obama called for a hike from the current $7.25 to $9 an hour, congressional Democrats pushed for a $10.10 rate.
But they couldn’t muster unity even within their own ranks. Six Democrats from conservative-leaning districts voted against the wage increase, as did every single Republican who was present.
“We need jobs out there. The best approach right now is to get federal spending under control and government out of the way of the nation’s job creators,” said Rep. John Kline, Minnesota Republican, who led the opposition.
Mr. Obama’s call for a hike to $9 an hour reportedly caught labor advocates off guard. They had been working towards the $10.10 figure.
The White House has not weighed in on the $10.10 raise.

Here in liberal Washington state the minimum wage just went to $9.19 and it’s tough for teens and college kids to find jobs, even part time.
Darn it. I was going to use that to support the family of four I wanted.

The Democrat’s proposal to raise the minimum wage was nothing more than a political ploy. They knew damn well that the Republicans, being more fiscally responsible, would have to defeat it. Now Obama the outsider has another issue with which to attack Republicans.

Base on a discussion in a related thread, possibly the reason that businessmen comply with constitutionally indefensible federal minimal wage laws is because they don't understand Congress's Section 8-limited powers imo.
Let the market set the wages. Enough said!
The minimum wage law is a full employment act for illegals who get paid under the table.
My first part-time job paid $.76 an hour which I got because I could crank out collection letters on a manual typewriter mistake free at 85 wpm. No breaks when you worked all day Saturday except 20 minutes for lunch, no food or beverages at your desk, no talking on the phone or with your co-workers unless it was work related. And there was no acceptable reason for being late or absent. Was 1957, small town USA, part-time jobs were pretty scarce and I was so glad to have that one.
Not many 17 year olds would accept such a job now, regardless of the pay.

Why do you think that elimination of the minimum wage is a poor idea? Why should any government entity have any say in what businesses pay their employees. For a lot of “poor” folks, a job at five bucks trumps waiting for someone who is willing to pay you $10. Thus far, government hasn’t passed legislation requiring that a private employer hire people even if they can’t afford them or don’t need them! But that may be next!
Ah, my meaning was that lowering the minwage was the poor alternative. The overwhelming preference is of elimination.
