FYI, the Guardian is an anti-Catholic rag.
“Looking beyond the common description of him as a cardinal who tends to the ecclesiastical left, in reality Bergoglio is a cardinal who has always had in his DNA the defense of the true principles of the Church, that orthodoxy that the so-called conservative Church believes should never be up for discussion. In that South American cradle of liberation theology and, often, of worldly interpretations of Catholic doctrine, Bergoglio has long been launching his offensive against more or less secular governments when it comes to subjects intimately involved with life and the family. This offensive has its origins, in fact, in the idea that the continent cannot forget its Christian roots. In 2009, Bergoglio took to heart the judgment of Judge Gabriela Seijas, who on the 13th of November ordered the civil registrar to marry two men. Cardinal Bergoglio called the bishops together and issued a joint communication which called this act absolutely illegal. Not only this, but the cardinal said that the government has seriously failed in its duty by not opposing the decision.
