Tragic but it does sound like a complete lack of parental control.

Not necessarily. Sometimes good parents just have bad kids. And sometimes "peer pressure" and the pack mentality make generally good kids do bad things.
And it looks like somebody took the vehicle without permission. So without further information, I'm not sure we can blame the parents.

Bad parents????
The SUV was taken without permission. Please enlighten us on your thought process, if there was one.
Kids do stupid stuff, some are lucky, some are not.

What a mess. Bad parents = dumb, reckless kids. Indeed, where are your parents, and why are they allowing you to make dumb, reckless, posts?

State Highway Patrol Lt. Brian Holt said at an evening news conference that speed was a factor, although investigators were still trying to determine the speed at the time of the accident. Typical cop-speak. They don't know how fast the vehicle was going, but they "know" speed was a factor. But it's a provable fact that parked vehicles rarely get into accidents. Interesting, though, that the only girl in the vehicle was the driver.
