They’ll turn their parents, brothers, children in for failing to bow to the picture of their dear leader. They’ll shoot anyone who breaks ranks.

Its already happened there before.

It’s heads or tails whether the ROKs (South Koreans) or the Israelis have the toughest army in the world, man-for-man. The ROKs have a first world economy while the avarage person in the DPRK (North Korea) is either starving or near starvation. Stunted, malnourished people usually don’t make good soldiers.

When I got there the first time the ROKs had just shot one of their army dudes. He fell asleep on guard duty at the ammo dump and the Lt found him, didn’t even wake him up.

kind of like when we went into Iraq the first time? However, the Korean war was fought against Chinese soldiers, right? So could this actually be China pushing the buttons?

I couldn’t imagine that any of the high ranking generals from the glory days of ‘’The Great Leader’’ are still around but I’m sure there are plenty from the days of ‘’The Dear Leader’’(the most recent dead guy) and I doubt very much they would have the stomach for war. Why would they? They’re living fat and sassy as it is. And what, they’re going to risk it all for this spoiled, pudgy fat-ass kid? They can’t be stupid enough to think they stand a chance in a war and I could hardly imagine China wanting any part of war. What would be the point? This isn’t the world of sixty years ago. All that ‘’evil, running dog capitalist warmonger’’ crap is so old hat the average Chinese soldier would laugh at it. ‘’Capitalist’’? Well sure comrade, my family have a nice apartment, a computer and a five-hundred channel flat-screen tv’’.

That's the impression I've always gotten from friends who served in South Korea. My sister dated a South Korean immigrant who was a sniper. He said they train like Army Rangers and have been doing it for 60 years. Their military technology is largely on par with ours as well.

Why would China want a land war to screw up their hundreds of billions of dollars worth of trade with the Republic of Korea, Japan and the United States just for the sake of one of the smallest economies in the world and arguably the smallest one in Asia? That would set them back decades and probably cause famine and mass unrest throughout their country. The politburo in China is very happy with being at the top of the totem pole, I'll wager.

Anybody that has been in Seoul can see that even a small nuke in the right place will easily wipe the majority of what we call the ROK off the map..while leaving a lot of fertile land further south.

Seems like a pretty tempting target as things get worse and worse in the north

It’s after 5 on a Sunday. Nobody will pick up the phone in the WH until at least 10a.m., maybe 11 if they haven’t caught up to DST yet.

I don’t “underestimate” them, especially since they’re Koreans and I lived amongst Koreans for two tours. My first assignment was at I Corps (ROK/US) Group where we were half & half. The commander was an American 3 star, deputy commander a Korean 2 star, chief-of-staff an American 1 star and so-on and so forth. All the general staff were Koreans with equal rank American deputies, etc. Half of the officers, NCOs and enlisted in my section were ROK soldiers.
