That aria has become a mass-culture icon by virtue of the Three Tenors Concert. It's hard to believe that that concert was almost a quarter-century ago and that Pavorotti is now gone, and Carreras and Domingo have gone on to other things.

Of course, Domingo still sings in public, but he is mostly occupied with directing the Washington Opera and conducting. Domingo sang at the Papal Mass in Washington, DC in April 2008 - the Franck Panis Angelicus with a supporting group of sixteen voices. I was in the Choir for that Mass - the day after my final radiation treatment for prostate cancer. One of the greatest moments of my life.

I haven't heard much of Carreras lately - I thought his rendition of Core N'grato at the Three Tenors Concert was peerless - another work I grappled with for some years. The three of them were then and now remain treasures - Rostropovich would have described them as Soldiers for Art.

They did the Franck “Panis Angelicus” at my mother’s funeral in 2002. Almost had a train wreck, but the soprano improvised her way out of it and ended successfully.
