Barack Obama says 'I wish I'd had a father' as he addresses guns in Chicago
President Barack Obama today urged the young men of America to help tackle gun violence by taking responsibility for raising their sons, using an emotional return to his home city to admit: I wish I'd had a father who was around and involved.
In an unusually personal speech at a school in his old Chicago neighbourhood, Mr Obama, who was raised by his mother, said his attempts to introduce new gun control laws must be matched by more men behaving like role models who are held up in respect by their sons, grandsons and nephews.
There's no more important ingredient for success, nothing that would be more important for us reducing violence than strong, stable families, which means we should do more to promote marriage and encourage fatherhood, said Mr Obama.
Hailing his heroic late mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, who gave everything she had to raise me, Mr Obama said in one of the most candid statements of his presidency: At the same time, I wish I had had a father who was around and involved.
Barack Obama senior, a Kenyan economist, divorced Ms Dunham in 1964, three years after the birth of their son. A heavy drinker, he died in a 1982 car accident, 11 years after he last saw Barack junior.

i will.
he had a stepfather, for one thing. more than lots of others did.
not surprising he grew up and is an angry black man destroying the country he blames, not one damn difference between him and the black rob-mobs and feral urban killers we have in this country. only difference’is he grew up with a lot more than they did.

I wish he’d had a mother so he wouldn’t have had to endure being raised by his typical white grandmother.

We wish he had had a father, too... No we don't
If he did not have a father (biologically speaking) he wouldn't be here.
You know, hereditary is a strange thing. If your parents did not have kids, it's likely you won't have any either.....

Frank involved himself pretty well.
I don't think it would have mattered if he had a father around all the time.
He would not have appreciated a good dad.

Thanks for the belly laugh.
Although a 75% rate of birth into a home without a father is a shame for any culture.
And that is after surviving a 70% rate of abortion.
Yeah, keep voting for them Democrats.

I genuinely feel sorry for him not having had a father. I was lucky enough to have a great father and both grandfathers in the same town who helped raise me. I took on two boys whose paternal father was also a drunk like his and know how much that hurt them. If he had grown up like I did maybe he would realize how angry it makes me that his policies would forbid my boys from being the fourth or fifth generation to own a couple of heirloom firearms.
