ERIE, Colo. (CBS4) – A Colorado company is threatening to leave the state if a bill to ban high-capacity ammunition magazines becomes law.
CBS4 Investigator Rick Sallinger toured the company in Erie. They said they would certainly prefer to stay.
The company is called Magpul. Among other products, they make ammunition magazines which can hold up to 30 rounds. Tuesday night a state House committee took the first step towards banning them.
Magpul is one of the largest producers of the high-capacity magazines in the country.
“Actually, every product you see here being made today on these magazine assembly lines would be affected by the bill,” Duane Liptak with Magpul told Sallinger during the tour.
The company’s chief operating officer, Doug Smith, made it clear to the state legislature that if the bill becomes law they will leave Colorado.
“We will be forced to take our operation and business activity through our subcontractors and suppliers out of the state,” Smith told lawmakers.
The bill in its present form would ban magazines carry over 15 rounds. Magpul has those that carry more, as displayed on its website.
The company has some 200 workers. It says another 400 suppliers and contractors would be affected by a move. But the committee chairman, Rep. Daniel Kagan, D-Cherry Hills Village, insisted there is no need to move.
“Your understanding of the bill is completely wrong,” Kagan said. “There is no restriction on manufacturing high-capacity magazines or anything else in the state of Colorado.”
Liptak said that’s not accurate.
“It may be not have been what they intended when they drafted the language, however that’s exactly how the bill reads,” Liptak said.
Magpul calls itself a “proud Colorado company,” but says in part for ideological reasons it cannot stay if the state bans one of its major products.
Texas will take Magpul and any other manufacturer that needs a low tax base of operation. There are dozens of amazing places with excellent incentives for this type development. Don’t Mess with Texas.

More manufacturers and accessory companies need to put the states on notice of similar actions if the continue to persue and approve of violating the 2nd amendment. Good for MagPul. Glad I “may” have bought some of their products.

Egads. Not another boating tragedy. Maybe make some little life jackets for them. Styrofoam (soon to be banned in nyc) and some duct tape ought to work. As long as their not full of extremely high power .223 ammo. You’d need more styrofoam in that case.
Not to mention general tourism. And many have already seen the diversions from I-70 preceding long drives through other parts of the State, more money spent on services generating revenues, etc.
Right... but, in the typical sleight-of-hand liberal doublel-speak, note Kagan slyly doesn't address the sale and possession of those high-cap magazines.
Well, they could float down stream so you could “find” them later.
Leftists will always write laws in the vaguest way they can get away with so they can say one thing to you before it passes them bring down the iron totalitarian fist after it becomes law.
Maybe the NRA could train and hire some gun-savers to be on station...

Colorado IS LOST!
Into this highly charged environment, I to am in the process of building a company that produces magazines. If Colorado passes this, I will have to locate my business in Wyoming.
Mmmm... move to Savannah, GA.
Right there is a port, an airport, Ft. Stewart, and Daniel Defense.
(D.D. makes and assembles their stuff there already and they use MagPul parts).
In fact, there is a great building ready to go, pretty much next to D.D. already.
GA would love that and Savannah is handing out corporate tax breaks like candy (or they were) for that kind of manufacturing.
Any state that is considering tougher gun laws is a lost cause if you’re looking out 15-20 years. Might as well go ahead and make the change.
