Priests named finalists to represent Germany in Eurovision 2013 with Gregorian hymn

The new take on a medieval classic could prompt this trio of Catholic priests to the European spotlight. On Saint Valentine's Day they will battle it out with other acts to represent Germany at the 2013 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Though it seems an unlikely place for a group of priests, the German trio is no stranger to the spotlight. They've already released a Top 10 album in 2011 featuring classic Catholic hymns. But this song could take them to new heights.

For the competition, Father Vianey Meister, diocesan priest Andreas Schatzkle and Abbot Rhabanus Petri have teamed up with German soprano Mojca Erdmann. Together they will perform Ave Maris Stella, a Gregorian song about the Virgin Mary, dating back to the Middle Ages.

Reminds me of the group of Irish born priests called simply, “The Priests”. I have a recording of theirs. Beautiful Christian/Catholic music.

How can you possibly compare the beauty, majesty and spender of their music to the mindless dum-dum ditty-ditty rah-rah rock of the typical Eurovision contestant?

This is a very nice rendition of Ave maris stella. However, I prefer a less theatrical approach.

The original hymn is medieval, and can be found in the Liber Usualis (1961 Ed.) pp. 1259-1260.

The rendition in the following link has 2 verses of the original hymn with one verse of beautiful polyphony written by Guillame Dufay.

I also have a version as an mp3 file by the Boston Camerata using period instruments. It is very interesting because it is sung in both Latin and what sounds like early French.

Beautiful. It is good that early music is reaching the population at large.

Mojca Erdmann

Biography
Praised by critics and loved by audiences for her beauty of tone and impeccable artistry, young soprano Mojca Erdmann is a rapidly rising star in the international music scene. Of her return to the Salzburg Festival in 2007, a critic wrote “The surprise of the evening, however, was Mojca Erdmann. (...) young, slim, blond, sporty, she was Mozart’s “Zaide” last year here in Salzburg. Now she sings “Zelmira”, a strong personality, a beautiful, warm, technically perfect voice that is highly expressive. She deservedly received the greatest applause.”

The Left is pissed. They tried to block, saying the song is 1,100 years old. But the song is “inspired” and new so it can compete.

“The Left is pissed.”

GOOD!

You know, it means that Mary, Star of the Sea (Maria maris stella) is just crushing the serpent’s head with her foot.

I love Boston Camerata, and have seen them in performance several times. I try to catch their Christmas program, and over the years, have seen their Renaissance, French, and Spanish programs. I think I have ALL their Christmas CDs. I’ll watch this video and see if this one is on any of my CDs.
