In celebration of its 100th birthday, the bad old days have returned to Grand Central Terminal.
Droves of homeless people are flooding the landmark again even as workers prepared for last weeks centennial celebration.
On a windy Wednesday, The Post spotted at least 40 hobos in search of free eats and a warm place to flop.
Its nauseating, said Yvette Molina, a Tarrytown resident, who was lunching in the concourse. Its really disgusting. It makes you lose your appetite.
In scenes reminiscent of the 1980s, one man picked through the garbage, rewarding himself with a half-eaten slice of pizza and a bag of nuts. A woman snored loudly as she slept, sitting upright on a concourse bench. And another man hoisted an oil can of Fosters lager with filth-encrusted fingers.
The sights and smells the stench of body odor easily overwhelmed the appetizing aromas from Magnolia Bakery are enough to rattle the senses of even the most seasoned travelers and workers.
Every day you see new homeless. Sometimes they smell a bad smell, said Hafiza Supti, who works at a Hudson News stand. I have to move from one place to the other place.

People don't realize the impact these things have on the economy, the life style of the city. The theater, concerts, in NY was long a joy of living/working in and near NYC. Thousands of commuters who worked in NY regularly went during the week. Your spouse would take the train in to meet you in the late afternoon.
Broadway curtains used to go up at 8 or 8:30. You'd have a nice dinner, in one of the many restaurants in the theater district, walk to to your show, get out between 11-12, then go back to your restaurant for coffee, dessert, a brandy,a and conversation, then take a cab to Grand Central, and catch the milk train about 2:30 am...sleep on the train, and then drive home from the local station.. a few miles. Funny, I also remember that the milk train would carry the papers, Times, News, Post, WSJ to be dropped off at the stations for all the morning commuters.
So when they closed GC, to keep the homeless out, theaters started 7 or 7:30 curtains, so that out of towners could still make the last train, about 1 am, but nobody eats dinner before or after the theater nowadays..Restaurant row, and a long enjoyable evening, is no more..
Hey Yvette! since you lost your appetite, give your meal to the homeless person who needs his appetite satiated! You're the one who's disgusting.
BTW, didn't Bloomberg a few years ago stop the churches from allowing to shelter homeless people?
I find the comments criticizing the homeless for being dirty or smelly and those criticizing them for doing what they can to get clean in the only places they can access a tad contradictory.
I understand the frustration of those who have to deal with them, but exactly how is such a person supposed to keep himself clean? Very few private businesses will let them use their restrooms, for entirely understandable reasons.
Wow..I didn’t realise I said all that!!!! Jesus had compassion on his fellowman...he went where the downtrodden were and he gave them hope and a hand up.
Your post reminded me of something.
There are/were homeless who live in the subway tunnels. When Sandy flooded the subways, chances are many drowned in the tunnels. The stench must be horrible there considering there would have been no proper burial.
Maybe Sandy moved the underground homeless to above ground. Chances are the homeless were always in NYC, just hidden till now.
NYC had plenty of shelters back then, where the homeless could get hot showers, food, a place to sleep, and even washing machines. Much of the homeless population, mainly those with psychological and/or addiction problems prefer living on the streets to going to the shelters. This is the population that took over GC.
Back before Guliani was elected, it was not uncommon to see a homeless person, mid day, in midtown, squatting between two parked cars taking a dump.

“True compassion for the homeless would be reopening the mental institutions that were closed by liberals in the name of compassion. Many (if not most) of these homeless have mental conditons and need a more structured/institutionalized environment, not free license to wander.”
The only thing required to make you homeless is to not have a home... Clearly some of the people in this category have mental conditions as do some of the people who do have homes. I don’t know what the break down is and neither do you.
As for myself, I have been fortunate in life; I’m rich, I’m handsome, I have a very high IQ and a loving family and a loving GOD. Life is good...
If people started giving more free handouts, the number of bums would increase. There is essentially an infinite supply of freeloaders and down-and-outers. Give away goodies, no matter how spartan, and more will come.
There are shelters which all have simple rules: no drinking, no smoking, no fighting, stuff like that. The bums don't like the rules, so they go elsewhere. It is not a case of the have not wanting to help the poor among them. It is a case of the poor and the filthy not wanting the help that is available.
Most of the tunnel inhabitants are in the midtown area. The subways flooded only in lower Manhattan. There might have been a few that drowned, but I suspect not.
He didn’t enable their bad behavior.

Some of my buddies and I are having a rough go of it. What say we come stay at your place a while. Shouldn’t be too terribly long. We won’t eat or drink too much. Might need to borrow a car now and then if you would leave the keys in it. Or even if you don’t. One of my pals—well, okay, a couple—aren’t exactly house-trained, if you know what I mean. But you’ll get used to it. And it really isn’t that hard to clean anyway. Upside is we’ll never take a shower!
Whaddya say there good lookin’? You and your loving GOD?
p.s. “rich, handsome, high IQ”...your name happen to be Biden?
We still have to distinguish between the deserving poor and the lazy. "He who does not work, neither shall he eat."
“The poor you will always have with you...”

Objection your honor. That's pure speculation.
In a court of law, Bloomberg's assertion, on the stand, that he's a Republican, would be perjury. Objective evidence can be obtained by going over to DU and noticing how many times they "hate" the Republican Bloomberg, as opposed to how many times they hate any other Republican.

Actually, Bloomberg WAS a Republican.
For four years.
Bloomberg, a life-long liberal Democrat, changed his registration to Republican in order to run for the mayoralty. Why? He couldn't have won the Democrat primary. So, he became a Republican.
But, before his first term was over, he renounced his Republicanism and re-styled himself as an Independent. He was re-elected as an Independent.
So, for four fleeting years, Bloomie actually was a Republican.
Kinda...
These are not hoboes. These are bums. Hoboes work, bums "bum" things, like "free eats".
