With Harkin’s announcement this morning, the political ground in the state is shifting 87 different ways. Lots of folks weighing their options, I assure you.

His wife has had some pretty heavy lobbying and corporate connections over the years, so you might wonder if there's some scandal or at least a lot of nest-feathering in the background.

There are already whispers about questionable fund-raising for the Harkin Institute they are setting up at Iowa State.

As for Tom, I imagine he started a folksy anecdote and got stuck in an endless loop and couldn't get out of it, and figured it was time to leave the Senate.

But will he leave Washington, or stick around and go into lobbying?

” US Rep Steve King looks pretty good”

Yep he’s good, but not the right guy to run for Senate here.

Why not, read his bio, seen him on Fox. Seems right of center and pro life.

Who is the youngest yet most Tea party right state rep or state senator that we can get behind on FR right now, today? I’m in Texas and I am willing to send money today to a tea party candidate that an Iowa tea party recommends.

Lots of us would be willing to support good candidates. We just need to be sure we “vet” them thoroughly first.

I say this as one who supported Mourdock enthusiastically and then Akin (reluctantly, after Sarah Steelman lost in the primary). We definitely do NOT need any candidates who will self-destruct and say STUPID things—as these two did.

Oh I know Steve very well, not personally, but very familiar with him.
We need to keep in the House. He is in a very conservative district in NW Iowa. The rest of the state is not that way.

There are others that would have a better chance of carrying the whole state in my opinion.

But his name will come up; and there will be a lot of discussion about it.

The other Republican Congressman, Tom Latham, has a better record of electoral success in Iowa.

Steve King is just waiting to be Palinized, Mourdocked and Akined by the partisan MSM.

Apparently, sitting eternally on top of the federal treasury has finally made him rich enough to stand on his own until death.

Too bad for our nation that he ever sought election to any political office in the first place.

At best Iowa is a 50/50 state as to what you’ll get. The state has gone democrat in five of the last six presidential elections. Bush won in 04 to breakup the run. The US Senators are split, one and one, the House delegation is split 2 each, the state house has maybe three more repubs with the state senate up a couple of dems. It most likely would come down to who has the most appeal be it a dem or rep. Then throw a 3rd or 4th party into the mix and who knows what you’ll get.

Fred Grandy endorsed Newt Gingrich before the Iowa caucuses. Lobbyist and commentator in D.C. He actually has been spoken of as a Republican candidate for governor in Iowa (to succeed Branstad). Unlikely he’d return to Iowa, but he might actually win.

Harkin is both old and worthless, and he has been that way for a long time.
