In his latest radio spot, Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. tells residents personal safety isn't a spectator sport anymore, and "I need you in the game."
"With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option," Clarke intones.
"You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back."
Clarke urges listeners to take a firearm safety course and handle a firearm "so you can defend yourself until we get there."
"You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. We're partners now. Can I count on you?"

And never will...
The name "Sheriff" goes back over a thousand years.....
defender of the realm, the kings rules and the local citizenry.
First Sheriff in the USA was in Virginia in 1620.
“First Sheriff in the USA was in Virginia in 1620.”
Thanks. I should have known that, but didn’t.
Or even half-a-minute away. A nearby store-front bank was robbed at gunpoint the other day near here. Two cops were in the Starbucks a couple stores down in the strip mall but obviously didn’t know anything happened until the call came in, re-routed, etc.
LOL! Great!
At first I mistakenly read the headline as “1911 not best option” - I thought maybe he had got his hands on the new XD-S or something, or was maybe a 12 gauge fan.
1911s rule.
Excellent.
Of the multiple times I had been involved in a violent episode I could have EASILY simply walked away, long gone, over the horizon, long before any cop ever showed after calling 911.

Milwaukee sheriff tells public to arm themselves. Calling 911 isn’t best option.

Sheriff David Clarke -- appointed by a Republican Governor. Calls himself a Democrat, but we all know how he votes ;-)
Sheriffs are elected. Police Chiefs are political appointments.

Here is what I just wrote to my democrat state Senator:
Sen. Prozanski,
Thank you for the town hall meeting you held in Roseburg the other night. It is so important to me that you take time out of your busy schedule to meet face to face with your constituents.
I was concerned that not one voter asked about your stance on any new gun legislation that may be introduced in the Oregon senate this session.
A new law or set of laws will only restrict law abiding citizens. Criminals will not all of a sudden say, "Oh I better not violate this new law the Oregon senate just passed," no it only affects law abiding citizens and since they are not the problem, only enforcement of existing laws will help with these violent and mentally deranged criminal's.
Our duly elected Sheriff, Hanlan, has stated in a letter to the VP of the US that he will not enforce any unconstitutional laws passed by the politicians in Washington DC, I imagine he would say the same about unconstitutional laws passed by the Oregon politicians.
I beg of you do not make guns that millions of law abiding citizens own LEGALLY, illegal. Most will not comply with an unconstitutional infringement on our 2nd amendment right, plus I have the assurance that my Sheriff, elected by the citizens of Douglas County as their chief law enforcement officer in Douglas County will not comply either. Respectfully, Diana Woodward Sutherlin, OR
Well done!!
On last night’s Duck Dynasty episode, Phil said, “Where I live, I AM nine-one-one.”
Sheriff Clarke felt that long since before he was Sheriff. He has been a lurker here for a long time, since at least 2000, when he attended our FReeper organized post election rallies in Milwaukee.
That’s awesome to hear - thanks for sharing that!
In the city people can rely on 911. Where I'm at I need to rely on 9mm.
