Lt. J. Paul Vance, the face of an ongoing Connecticut State Police investigation into worst grade-school shooting in U.S. history, Thursday debunked media and Internet reports that Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza killed his victims with handguns and not the Bushmaster XM-15 E2S rifle that is now the focus of a proposed federal assault-weapons ban.
All 26 of Lanza's victims were shot with the .223-caliber semi-automatic rifle, said Vance, who bristled at claims to the contrary during an interview with Hearst Connecticut Newspapers.
"It's all these conspiracy theorists that are trying to mucky up the waters," said Vance, the longtime state police spokesman. Multiple Second Amendment and gun owner websites have attempted to cast doubts on whether the Bushmaster XM-15, a type of AR-15 rifle that is currently legal, was used in the Dec. 14 carnage done by Lanza.
Some have cited a Dec. 15 "Today" show video clip from the day after the shooting, in which NBC News Justice Department correspondent Pete Williams said that four handguns were recovered inside Sandy Hook Elementary School and that the Bushmaster rifle was found in the trunk of a car owned by Lanza's slain mother, Nancy Lanza.
"There's no doubt that the rifle was used solely to kill 26 people in that school," Vance said.
Twenty children ages 7 and under and six female educators were killed when Lanza forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and sprayed the occupants with bullets before turning a gun on himself.
Vance said he made it abundantly clear during his media briefings since the tragedy that Lanza carried out the shooting with the Bushmaster.
"I personally articulated that probably a dozen times in Newtown," Vance said.

This isn't anything new.
And if they hadn't been shot with the rifle, then what would they have been shot with?
Adam Lanza certainly had no lack of options to choose from.
This guy is a “long time” spokesman for the CT police.
What he says may well be true. But we’ll never know for sure. The initial reports certainly were contradictory.
And if this guy knows which side his bread is buttered on, he’ll say whatever the flaming liberal guv of CT tells him to say.
There was no obvious reason not to release the data, since the perp was dead, his mother who owned the guns was dead, and no one else was suspected. So there will be no trial.
So the refusal to release information was mainly CYA. Don’t let anything out until it’s been cleared with the top politicians. And that goes right up to Holder and Obama.
Im still waiting for a witness to come forward and say I saw Lanza shooting everyone, etc
Hard to beleive no witness lived to tell the tale...
In a sane world, this is what would be said. We do not live in a sane world.
Drug dealer? Someone fleeing the sound of gunshots? Person with guilty conscience? Trespasser? Nosy Parker? Complete and total fabrication by some MSNBC journalist?
If it bothers you that much, call the police in Connecticut and ask them. Any front desk person probably won't even know anything about it at this point, but heck, we can launch a Congressional investigation if you want.
The 'many'(sic) conflicting reports were based on one erroneous news story by a local NBC station tripping over itself to try to get the first story out. The official word has been pretty consistent it was done with the rifle. Unfortunately conspiracy sites have become more mainstream making up a bunch of s*** and not being critical of that initial media story.
It is all about banning whatever type of firearm owned by "the people" that would present a danger or an obstacle to the current "well regulated militia".
As you said....control.
They’re emboldened by their success with their “Many people wrongly assume Obama wasn’t born in America” horseclinton.
Direct your anger at the right folks, Vance. Many of us responded just the same way as the rest have in the past.. tragedy is magnified by the media glare and distortions tossed about.. Too bad the mother and gunowner refused to lock her guns up even tho she knew the perp was a bit off.. or is that another fact used thru omission or distortion?
It was a tragedy, a senseless, preventable one.. the answer started at home.
Yeah. Almost as if they were either deliberately withholding the information when they first knew, or they are making it up as they go to suit the agenda of the minute...
hehe
If the killer had done the damage with handguns, we’d have all the same conspiracy threads claiming they were actually shot with an ordinary rifle, and we’d also have handgun-banning hysteria.
He was shooting small children in a gun free zone. He could have used anything. What matters is the sick and evil person who was doing the shooting.
It was confirmed a month and a half ago at the state of Connecticut's December 15th news conference and has been confirmed about a dozen times since then.
Yep, the conspiracies have been getting absolutely asinine. The other day, the newest one was a couple of nuns who worked there were photographed leaving and someone was getting all a twitter because one of the old nuns was holding her jacket closed like she was hiding something..... so obviously she was not really a nun but a CIA Killer in drag sneaking his gun out. They were completely serious too.
Might as well have just said it was Ancient Aliens.
"More than a week after the shooting, investigators were still finding bullets under doors and in carpets and walls in the school as they tried to match the casings to the magazines.
What is difficult about matching casings to magazines if they were all shot with the same rifle?
You mean sourced in an erroneous December 15th NBC news report that was corrected the same day by the coroner.
He was a parent named Manfredonia who had a child in the school and whose story checked out.
