Thirty-two arrests of suspected mobsters or mafia associates were made in dawn raids across New York and New Jersey today as part of an ongoing investigation into mafia control of the private garbage-hauling industry. Suspected members of five key criminal families in the area were arrested, according to ABC News.
They said figures known as 'Papa Smurf,' 'Uncle Sonny' and 'Joe Cali' in the criminal underworld had been detained and charged with running an extortion racket. It is the lastest operation in the joint FBI and police investigation investigating illegal ties between waste disposal and the mafia.
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, said they believed those charged control several garbage-hauling businesses in five suburban counties. 'Organized crime still wraps its tentacles around industries it has fed off for decades,' Bharara told ABC, 'but law enforcement continues to pry loose its grip. Here, as described in the indictments, organized crime insinuated itself into the waste disposal industry throughout a vast swath of counties in New York and New Jersey, and the tactics they used to exert and maintain their control come right out of the Mafia playbook -- extortion, intimidation, and threats of violence.'
Charges against those arrested include racketeering, extortion, mail and wire fraud, and conspiracy to transport stolen property.
One of those arrested recently retired as a state trooper from the New York Police.

Tell me its not true. The Mob controls carting in NY?
The Mafia is involved in the New York and New Jersey garbage collection business???? I’m shocked.
Shocked, shocked...
One time I was doing some work at my home and I needed a 10 yard dumpster so I started calling around to all the different carting companies listed in the phone book. I called three or four different companies and the same guy answered the phone each time.
First vending companies, then pizza parlors, now sanitation services? What next? But now we know how they’ve been getting away dumping bodies for years undetected.../s
Well, here’s a first.
There is a documentary on Youtube about the Mafia’s response to the making of the Godfather. Pretty interesting stuff.
"Giuliani also directed the New York City Police Department to aggressively pursue enterprises linked to organized crime, such as the Fulton Fish Market and the Javits Center on the West Side (Gambino crime family). By breaking mob control of solid waste removal, the city was able to save businesses over $600 million."
Must be these toilets and the mafia aren't on the Zippy/Holder favored list. Would be interesting to see what role Bloomberg plays in this, you never see him and Zippy together.
According to Mr. Melon, yes.
“There’s the long-term costs,
such as waste disposal.
I don’t know if you’re familiar
with who runs that business...
but I assure you
it’s not the boy scouts.”
They might have to put up a monument at the NY trash dump and call it:
The Tomb of the Unknown Hit.
In Los Angeles, the “rubbish cartel” were Armenian. (not that there is anything wrong with that! )
“Nice garbage can you got here, shame if anything happened to it.”
Amazing how that works, isn’t it. And the concrete cartel is controlled by the Italians. I forget what the Irish control.
No! Can’t be true!
Yes, waste disposal is an issue. There was a guy who decided to run a carting business out on Long Island. They never found his body.
see....I'm just cynical of anything the govt does...
see a need, make it a crisis, and whammo....the sheeple vote for it or allow it...
like the waste to energy plants..
