Just before Oakland city officials held a news conference Monday in East Oakland to assure everyone that they've got a handle on crime, I took a little walk around the neighborhood to ask local residents if they felt safe.
Vincent Peters, 32, who was waiting for a bus with his wife and their 2-month old daughter, definitely does not. He said he's preparing to move his family from the area because he values their safety.
"You can hardly walk down the street without someone pushing a gun at you," Peters said. "These kids are scared, and that's why they're carrying guns and knives too.
"I'm not fixing to raise my daughter here," he said. "I guess I'm moving to the suburbs. Good schools, less crime."
As I walked, I found it next to impossible not to run into a local resident who hadn't been touched directly or indirectly by gun violence in this part of the city.
Across the street from the spot where the news conference was to take place on the windswept 6400 block of International Boulevard, Alexander Brown, a 22-year-old student, talked about his run-ins with violence. He has been robbed and beaten, and had a gun stuck in his face two years ago.
He relies on his deep religious faith to see him through. "I put my faith in my creator," said the young man.
Literally 5 feet down the block, brothers Boogie and Antwan Johnson, who were walking home, also had a story of violence to tell.

This is how the urban black culture creates a blight wherever it takes root.
And that is the culture that’s become dominant and celebrated in America.
No offense to any FReepers who might be living in that cesspool of a city, but I hope Oakland burns itself to the ground.
Oakland and it’s sister city Chicago.
It’s not just the urban “gangster” black culture, but their liberal white handlers.
Part of the problem comes when “leaders” are perceived to have any kind of control over human nature.
Where I live, authority and leadership are virtually non existent and crime is even rarer. Its because the people here are different than they are in Oakland.
Wow. Who would have thought that an urban area with many urban ferals (who happen to be black) would be a dangerous place? I guess, I keep getting surprised.
Oakland has been a violent lawless drug drenched festering hellhole for many many years. This is just the politicians and complicit media piping up on queue. It’s the same scary dangerous graffiti festooned post-apocalyptic blight it’s always been.
Which is the reason why crime is rarer in the German countryside. The Germans actually have fewer laws than we do, even though their society is much more regimented and the police have much more authority. Of course, this is not as true as it was before unification. In the West. there was something like ordered liberty. In the East there was order without liberty, and then afterwards, liberty without order. Like slaves suddenly let out of prison. Call to mind the character of Red, played by James Whitmore in Shawshank... To be free can be a crushing thing. People become accustomed to their chains, even grow to love them.
Its the moral requirement for society that people as far back as Socrates were talking about. You just don’t need a lot of government or laws for moral people.
But, but, the MSM told me the strict guns laws stop gun crime.
Feral Urbans.
New name Ferbans.
Usage:
Will we have an open Ferban season?
And for a gang of robbers, no number of laws is sufficient. This is why the old term outlaw was so much more meaningful than criminal.”
Straw Purchasers cause crime. Something the Feds know well and the MSM doesn’t.
No one is going to disarm gangs or anti white racist. That would work against the leftist agenda.
You are right. Morgan Freeman was Red. Speaking of Black Actors, In his most recent film, Denzel Washingtons character says something quite moving, that he had to go to jail to be free. Paul likewise was perfectly free because he was a prisoner of the Lord, so to speak.
Not hollow bullet I assume.
“Get busy livin’ or get busy robbing and shooting people for stuff you were too lazy to work for.” -Morgan Freestuff
