Woman Hiding in Attic Shoots Intruder Five Times to Protect Her Children [GA]

It seems as though real life examples of guns saving -- rather than taking -- innocent life go largely unreported (or flat-out ignored) in the mainstream media. Therefore, I have decided to post the following must-read story in its entirety (via Cameron Gray):

A woman hiding in her attic with children shot an intruder multiple times before fleeing to safety Friday.

The incident happened at a home on Henderson Ridge Lane in Loganville around 1 p.m. The woman was working in an upstairs office when she spotted a strange man outside a window, according to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman. He said she took her 9-year-old twins to a crawlspace before the man broke in using a crowbar.

But the man eventually found the family.

"The perpetrator opens that door. Of course, at that time he's staring at her, her two children and a .38 revolver," Chapman told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh.

I am just pointing out that there are many reasons for giving the left more reasons to hate gun owners

They will always have reasons K...we cannot live worrying about that.

Gail is quite right.

Beautiful story. Brought tears to my eyes. Too bad she ran out of lead.

For anyone who'd like to listen to the 911 call, there's a selection of sources here to choose from: Google Search for Donnie Herman 911

Everyone will hear something different in the caller's voice. To me, he sounded like a worried father and husband too far from his wife and children to help them. He sounded relieved when she shot the intruder.

You did, and not saying it wasn’t warranted to put his hand on his firearm and even draw it.

The challenge in the law is “brandishing”?

Definition of BRANDISH *Webster*

1: to shake or wave (as a weapon) menacingly
2: to exhibit in an ostentatious or aggressive manner

CODE OF GEORGIA

16-11-102 : Pointing or aiming gun or pistol at another: A person is guilty of a misdemeanor when he intentionally and without legal justification points or aims a gun or pistol at another, whether the gun or pistol is loaded or unloaded.

Was it condition orange or red?
Was it legally justified?

Most likely, yes.

My training is that I don’t draw my firearm until condition red — an active threat.

The reality is that for thugs 1-3, the appearance of a firearm is a REAL deterrent. They will withdraw and await easier targets. Your life goes on. The problem is the law.

No worries.

This poor woman took the trouble to go hide in an attic. The perp was free to rob her house at will but he went to seek her out. He had plans for her and her kids. She did the right thing to open up on him and its just too bad she didn’t have that .38 loaded with critical defense rounds or she would have killed him. Her husband was probably yelling at her to make sure she didn’t lose her nerve and stop shooting.

You don’t warn the threat until it goes away you shoot it till it goes away.

I apologize for the name calling. I am not suggesting that killing anyone (even someone who deserves it) is pleasurable.

Yes, people will run if they see a gun or hear the distinctive sound of a shotgun slide, but you have forfeited precious time if they have a different response.

I just strongly feel that a weapon should not be drawn unless it is being used. The way to become a member of that tiny statistic of people whose gun is used against them is to wave it around without intending to use it.

Though I haven't read any such thing, one can't help but suspect the perp was on crack. Crooks don't generally seek out residents nor do they lunge at a homeowner with a firearm.

Crooks would rather escape without notice/identification and crooks know that a citizen with a gun isn't predictable and is more likely to shoot than a cop.

The "husband on the phone" did a masterful job of keeping his wife relaxed and able to follow directions, using humor to de-stress the situation ... so the job could get done.

Why wasn't the perp dead, Mr.K? Now that's an appropriate question.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

Odd the criminal didn’t know it was against the law to break into someone’s home.

It’s almost like we couldn’t trust criminals to follow stricter gun control laws...
