Miss America 2013 Mallory Hytes Hagan left her native Alabama for New York at age 18
LAS VEGAS (AP) A woman from Brooklyn, N.Y., is the new Miss America, winning the title after tap dancing to a James Brown tune, deftly dealing with a question about guns, and raising the issue of child sexual abuse in her contestant platform.
In addition to dancing to "Get Up Off of That Thing," 23-year-old Mallory Hagan strutted down the runway during the Las Vegas pageant Saturday night in an asymmetrical white gown and donned a revealing black string bikini.
She won a $50,000 college scholarship and a year as an instant celebrity and role model to many girls as she defeated Miss South Carolina Ali Rogers, who took second, and Miss Oklahoma Alicia Clifton, who finished third.
She told The Associated Press in an interview after her win that it was her mother who encouraged her to tackle the issue of child sex abuse in her platform the issue she will promote during her reign.

She is 23 now, left AL for Brooklyn at age 18, but managed to graduate from Auburn? Something doesn’t really add up.
Oops! You're correct. Here's what my local Alabama newspaper says:
" She grew up in Opelika and attended Auburn University, but now lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn."
Carpetbagger!!!!!
Probably a good idea to leave Alabama if she doesn’t support gun ownership.
That's correct.
Not Miss America quality.
Miss S Carolina should have won.
So? If Misses Clinton can run as Senator of New York, what is wrong with this girl doing what she did?
I saw her post victory interview. She seems very classy and articulate to me. One thing that makes sense now to me — She certainly did not sound like a “New Yawka” to me. I know because I used to live there.
But Mrs. Clinton should not, ethically, run for Senator of New York. Legal and ethical are not the same thing. And I am sad to hear this Miss America was raised in Opelika, less than ten miles from where I now reside. What on earth would make her want to live in Brooklyn, of all the God-forsaken places? I was not born nor raised in the South, but I would choose nearly anywhere in it over Brooklyn. And yes, I went once and saw Brooklyn. They have good pizza. That is my positive comment on Brooklyn.
I wouldn’t kick her out of bed but I’ve seen prettier women in Alabama.
Wow Miss South Carolina for sure. Absolutely gorgeous, much prettier than “New York.”
Damn carpetbagger!
Mitt out makeup I’d kick her out of bed!
What were the removed ## 21 & 22, pictures from her earlier career in the, uh, industry?
I would kick her out of bed to get coffee and bacon. I earned it.
Nah. They were a triplicate post...same as #20.
The winner couldn’t hold a candle to Miss S. Carolina- that’s for sure.
