Computer users told to disable Java Press Association 16 hours ago
Press Association - Computer owners in the US have been advised to temporarily disable Java software (AP)
The US Department of Homeland Security has advised people to temporarily disable the Java software on their computers to avoid potential hacking attacks.
The recommendation came in an advisory which was issued following concerns raised by computer security experts.
Experts believe hackers have found a flaw in Java's coding that creates an opening for criminal activity and other hi-tech mischief.
Java is a widely used technical language that allows computer programmers to write a wide variety of internet applications and other software programs that can run on just about any computer's operating system.
Oracle bought Java as part of a 7.3 billion US dollars acquisition of the software's creator, Sun Microsystems, in 2010.

Agreed. My answer is to run a strong always in memory anti-virus program. It’s kept me safe (knock on wood!) I recently discovered, running an anti malware program, that I had a nasty trojan file on disk. It never did any damage.
This youtube clip is still enabled...

Run ad bock in your browser, don’t go to porn sites, and don’t open links people randomly send you on facebook or email. You’ll be fine.
I had trouble removing Java because I got asked questions during the uninstall, requiring a Yes or No answer.
My instinct was to answer No - but only by answering Yes was I able to finally delete it. - tom
Do sensible Mac users need to disable Java? By sensible, I mean those of us who don’t frequent questionable websites, or download weird stuff?
If so, maybe a quick explanation is needed.
I don’t know beans about computers, but I stopped using Firefox years ago. Too many plug-in crashes, IIRC. No Java on the pc I’m currently using, and youtube videos work just fine in Opera browser.
That said, yesterday I had something unusual crop up with an ATI program called CLI.exe, while doing a lot of graphics work. It never appeared before — I keep an eye on task mgr to see what’s running — and suddenly there were two listings for CLI.exe. Some say it’s a virus; others say it’s just some harmless program that ATI normally packages. I dunno. But it’s probably less dangerous than Homeland Security and Java. :)
Used to wish for a doctor in the family. Now I’d rather have a computer expert.
Re-install it. Mine works fine.
I think you're confusing Java with JavaScript. They are not the same thing.
Using FF almost extensively.
Just checked, it’s disabled. Didn’t even notice any difference.
Thank you for telling me how to remove Java from my programs. I was wondering how to do that. Learn something new every day.
Yeah, thank God.
I cannot find a Tools tab on Firefox, where do I find it?
Jacquej, Java has not been installed on Macs as a default since OSX.4. So if you didn’t install it because some software you use needs it, don’t worry.
