We are raising a generation of deluded narcissists
FoxNews.com ^ | January 8, 2013 | Dr. Keith Ablow

A new analysis of the American Freshman Survey, which has accumulated data for the past 47 years from 9 million young adults, reveals that college students are more likely than ever to call themselves gifted and driven to succeed, even though their test scores and time spent studying are decreasing.

Psychologist Jean Twenge, the lead author of the analysis, is also the author of a study showing that the tendency toward narcissism in students is up 30 percent in the last thirty-odd years. This data is not unexpected. I have been writing a great deal over the past few years about the toxic psychological impact of media and technology on children, adolescents and young adults, particularly as it regards turning them into faux celebrities—the equivalent of lead actors in their own fictionalized life stories.

I found it telling when “i” and “my” replaced “e” (i.e. email) in Internet lingo. The Internet has become a place for narcissists to tell everyone how great they are and to allow sociopaths to sow their seeds with no consequence for their actions.

What we need in this country is a big ol’ EMP. Just wipe it all out for a few weeks and show everyone what it means to live. It’ll serve to cull the herd since many will likely go batshit crazy, while those prepared among us will shoot anyone who’s nuts enough to come looting our stores. Win-win!

not difficult to accept...70% of the students are women....

I feel so sorry for the "black" boys being raised by these "baby mamas" filling our entitlement generation.

If they go to school, they're pushed aside to become second fiddle to the girls.

At home, being fatherless, they have no idea what a man (husband) does in a home, such as helping, holding, nurturing, hugging, laughing, helping "mom," being an island of refuge when mom's not in a good mood, being a helper around the house.

The young black boy gets to see "baby momma" have a trail of boyfriends come through the house, none of them staying too long, some of them leaving behind another unborn sibling.

Being faced with staying home to do homework for an unconcerned teacher or perhaps palling around with a future gang group.

More than likely being given moronic non-Christian first names that sound more like background sounds to music, which will make them standout the rest of their lives on resumes and job applications.

Seeing thug-like punks with hats askew doing their ominous "rap" struts, groans, and moans, covered with gold chains, jewels, and half-naked women.

Being made fun of at school if they happen to do well.

etc.

I could go on, and on, and on.

The only respite I get from TV is METV ...
Me too. I just can not fathom how people can watch the insulting, asinine trash that's offered today.
I'm thiiiiiiis close to canceling cable and only my love for baseball stops me from pulling the plug ... for now.

I can’t even take FNC anymore. Everytime Juan Williams or Beckel comes on I switch the channel. I love Finding Bigfoot on Animal Planet. Bobo is a hoot.

On Facebook, young people can . . . “speak” in pithy short posts

Now wait a minute . . .

Our family is right there with you. Took my kids to the Reagan Library. Great experience. Nixon Library is next. We’re into Get Smart re-runs, and send the kids to Catechism, go to Church, etc.

The sad thing is not just that CA is tanking, but that the kids know it and are bummed about the future, instead of having that hope that California and America has always evoked.

My sensitive high-school age daughter is so appalled that the state of CA is going to be teaching about gay heroes in school, she actually grieves for Governor Brown’s soul. For kids with a sound moral core, they have a hard job to buck the cultural tide on a daily basis. I’m just glad my parents didn’t live to see this decline.

Wow. That’s good to know. I am not the only one out here. Some people say we should move out of CA. The way I see it, the rest of the nation is following CA’s madness, delusional disregard for piling up massive debt, and cultural narcissism. BHO would have won the presidency in both 2008 and 2012 even if CA had voted for his opponents.

I worked for a gentleman who was a retired Marine Corps Lieutenant. We called him “Lou,” even though his name was Gary. It was out of respect for him and his rank. Even as a 20-something out-of-college contractor, I understood my role in the pecking order.

Kids today don’t understand pecking orders. They think that simply by virtue of existing or having some vaunted piece of paper from a university that they deserve the highest of esteem from all of their peers.

It’s been my experience that most liberals who think this way are petty and insignificant and seeking some sort of validation for their existence.

“High self esteem is bogus if its not earned.”

The new-age concept of “self esteem” is anti-Biblical. Philippians 2:3 is clear about that.

LOL - so true. There is a guy at the office here (from another company) that walks around and always has an e-reader in his hand. Takes it into the restroom with him. I thought for sure he have to break contact when he washed his hands and he did, but laid it next to the sink and continued to read while he washed/dried hands. And then he was on his way. [My brother and I affectionately call him Kindle]

Incredibly prescient thought process here, la! I never considered the militant feminist movement entangled with the “Great Society” mentality and affirmative action. I think you may have stumbled on to something here.

By this line of reason, one could argue that it’s truly the fault of the militant feminists for the plight of the black man in this society. They held up the woman as this paragon of power (Power of the P*ssy, Vagina Monologues, etc.), took away the stigma of sex with multiple partners by providing free “birth control,” increased societal desire for sexual activity outside of wedlock “because it feels good,” promoted abortion as a substitute to child rearing, and now we have women who are having sex out of wedlock, refusing to get an abortion, having children from multiple partners, and raising their daughters to continue the cycle while the sons are left to join gangs and try to make sense of life through rap lyrics and sports stars.

That line of reasoning is going to be at the forefront of my mind now. Thank you.

Dr. Ablow hit the nail directly on the head. I’ve had the misfortune of having to interviewing some of these deluded children, and when they don’t get the job, they are shocked. When I was asked directly by one why he wasn’t selected, I was very honest. I flat told him, he had delusions of adequacy.

He didn’t know what it meant, so I had to tell him what my father use to tell me, “look it up.”
