People who use recreational drugs are attempting to temporarily escape reality. Attempting to escape reality is insane and cowardly. I’ve been posting this for years, and nobody can refute it. Some try to justify their cowardice. “People in New Guinea jump into piles of stones so it’s OK for me to smoke pot.” Others try to put a brave face on cowardice. “What’s wrong with cowardice?” There’s a question I never thought I’d be asked. Legal or illegal, recreational drugs just produce more cowardly people in our country. I come to Free Republic and, every day, there are people wondering how the Democrat voters could vote for Democrat candidates. IT IS BECAUSE THEY ARE SCARED. So let’s have more recreational drugs and produce more chickens who vote Democrat. I don’t use recreational drugs. I don’t like seeing the illegal drug dealers getting rich, but put this under government control, and ALL OF US will be paying for drug use as they hire 250,000 new government employees to keep tab of their money. Yep, that’s right. Legalize it and create more Democrat voters and watch your taxes go up so they can hire more Democrat government employees.

Will you ever tell us what should be done about the people who use the use the drug alcohol to temporarily escape reality? Note that "ban other drugs" is not an answer.

Maybe because it's a gratuitous assertion. As such there is nothing worth refutation.

I can refute it. Life sucks. This is a major principle of Christianity, for instance, though not in those words. Everyone agrees on that, basically. What is so irrational about wanting to feel good, wanting to escape suffering temporarily? Is it cowardly to participate in sports? But play is escape from reality. So are a million activities not directly tied to subsistence, especially sex.

What we’re talking about here, I trust, is a matter of degree. Should you escape reality to the extent that you get high or drunk, you are insane and cowardly. Anything less is acceptable. I find you’re being arbirtary, but of course I am too. Some level of escape is bad, and yes cowardly, though I wouldn’t say insane. I put the bar higher than what the general run of humanity tends to be able to get by on. Putting it at any recreational drug use whatsoever is what’s insane.

By the way, you don’t use “recreational” drugs, but do you drink? Is that not cowardly and insane? Why, because it lacks the modifier “recreational”?
