A candlelight vigil was held in Boulder Sunday evening for an elk that was shot by a police officer last Tuesday.
The vigil was held on Mountain View Road near where the incident occurred. Some residents say the elk was considered a friend and even a guardian. They created a memorial at a tree in the area.
Two police officers who were involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave while the Boulder Police Department investigates.

Several neighbors told CBS4 they feel there was no reason to kill the animal, and they are encouraging others to complain about what happened.
He was just a majestic being and its so sad that it came down to this, its heartbreaking, neighbor Jennifer Centeno said.
Mark Rourke, a postal carrier who delivers mail to the Mapleton Hill neighborhood, told CBS4 the elk had been seen in the neighborhood over the past week or two, and that although it once cornered him on a porch, it didnt deserve to die.
I think it was just being defensive. I scared it when I walked through the gate, he said. It makes me sick, it just makes me sick. It was a beautiful animal.
One person at the vigil called the elk a wonderful visitor to the neighborhood and he truly loved the elk.
I cried; outraged; I lost a very dear friend, resident Marcus OBryon said. I know thats hard for some people to believe, but he was an incredible, magnificent creature.

The forest animals are laughing at these people.

Note to California...
...we found your missing hippies.
And as for those memorial spots at the scene of whatever where people put the stuffed animals, flowers and cards, they end up as nothing more than a trash dump after the first heavy rainfall that somebody has to clean up.......
And if I were to be killed, the last place my family would be is standing around in the front yard crying with the neighbors, waiting for the news crew to arrive..........
OK, rant is over.....
Cop might’ve mistaken it for somebody’s dog.
This vigil would make for a really great South Park episode.
I had an elk burger once. I liked it; tasted like beef.
Perhaps the moose bit the officer’s sister?
Better to ask how many joints are being murdered in that picture?
I remember when I was a kid, I wantonly slaughtered an defenseless ant, and a little girl went off on me about how it had a life and I took it away.
My education in liberalism started at a young age.
Either a brilliant pun, or this dolt has no life whatsoever.
These people have too much free time. This how people become when they have no trials or tribulations in their life. Humans need some sort of ‘cause.’ If all the normal needs like food, shelter, clothing, entertainment, etc. are taken care of then people tend to do stupid things like this. I’m not saying these people are stupid. I’m saying the only reason they have time to even worry about this sort of thing is because all of their real needs are met and probably have always been met as long as they have lived.
A VERY large wild animal with formidable weapons... while I think the cop acted improperly, the residents are also moon-eyed morons. Go "be one" with a grizzly bear, kids.
They need Cartman and his hippie drill..
Entire generations of hard working slime mold colonies are being slaughtered within every square inch sat upon.
Will they hold another vigil?
I don't know but allowing morons to play with fire is never a good idea.
After reading this “article” I think I’m going to hurl.
This is what we have come to in today’s society...holding candlelight vigils for dead animals and worse yet, it making national news.
That is a residential area and the size of the Elk makes me think the action taken was correct for public safety.
Geez - I hope there are no slaughter houses in Colorado. This bunch would be suicidal.
And people wonder how Obama got reelected. Our nation is filled with madness. We have truly lost the ability to reason and have collapsed into raw emotionalism. Notice how many females are in this picture. The vaunted female who's collective emotions now trump everything in society.
This is what we now all must bow down to, female emotion. It's in every commercial. It's in every sitcom. In every form of pop culture and politics. We are doomed.
Has anybody notice a few things that don’t look right here.
In the picture with the officer and elk theres snow on the ground, he’s wearing heacy winter gear and all the grass is brown.
Now compare it to the picture of the vigil that was later.
Lush green grass, some in shorts most in t-shirts. Gang the temps in boulder at that time were running in the low teens.
