Candlelight Vigil Held For Elk Killed By Police Officer In Boulder (Colorado)
CBS News Denver ^ | January 6, 2013

A candlelight vigil was held in Boulder Sunday evening for an elk that was shot by a police officer last Tuesday.

The vigil was held on Mountain View Road near where the incident occurred. Some residents say the elk was considered a friend and even a guardian. They created a memorial at a tree in the area.

Two police officers who were involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave while the Boulder Police Department investigates.

Several neighbors told CBS4 they feel there was no reason to kill the animal, and they are encouraging others to complain about what happened.

“He was just a majestic being and it’s so sad that it came down to this, it’s heartbreaking,” neighbor Jennifer Centeno said.

Mark Rourke, a postal carrier who delivers mail to the Mapleton Hill neighborhood, told CBS4 the elk had been seen in the neighborhood over the past week or two, and that although it once cornered him on a porch, it didn’t deserve to die.

“I think it was just being defensive. I scared it when I walked through the gate,” he said. “It makes me sick, it just makes me sick. It was a beautiful animal.”

One person at the vigil called the elk a wonderful visitor to the neighborhood and he truly loved the elk.

“I cried; outraged; I lost a very dear friend,” resident Marcus O’Bryon said. “I know that’s hard for some people to believe, but he was an incredible, magnificent creature.”

Those bad old cops wouldn't have shot Elmo the Elk if we had stricter gun control laws ... to keep dangerous weapons away from the police!

The investigation will begin as soon as the Police Elk Barbecue is finished.

I'm surprised the cops in Banff, Alberta aren't going crazy shooting the elk that roam all over town and on the golf courses!

Elk is some might good eating. Yum yum!

That said, as silly as the vigil/local response is...I’m not entirely sure I buy the officer’s story, either. It may have been that the elk was injured and needed to be put down, or it might have been a case of poaching (if that’s the correct word used here). If I ran across an animal sick or injured enough that it needed to be put down, I’m not sure I’d be that eager to have it wind up on my dinner table.

Just sayin’.

It is another outbreak of “Boulder Dementia Syndrome”. Note the clear loss of objectivity in the following post by a consummate career Trough Feeder, PostalPerson Mark O’Rourk said of the elk which had threatened him and cornered him on a porch recently, “..it didn’t deserve to die.”

Yes, indeed, PostalPerson - let over a quarter of a ton of mad meat introduce you to its antlers and kick you into downtown Boulder with its pointy hoofs.

See what happens when someone (ME) jump to conclusions just by looking at the headline.

I thought maybe one of the boys got rowdy at the Sat night BPOE dance.

Sorry.......................

One might ask if these mourners had a life or something but....

Let’s see if I understand this correctly:

* No report filed
* No proof that elk was actually injured
* Quickly spirited away to be dressed out for “personal” use

Certainly sounds like poaching to me. Will there be any repercussions? Very unlikely.

The elk was killed on Tuesday near the intersection of 9th and Mapleton, and Beckner said the incident wasn’t reported by either officer until residents began to ask questions about the killing. He said Carter, who was on duty and on patrol in the area at the time, ended up admitting he spotted the elk and felt the animal needed to be “humanely euthanized” because it was injured.

After Carter shot and killed it with a single shot, he called Curnow. After Carter posed for a photo with the elk, Curnow “took the elk in his own vehicle to process the meat for personal use,” Beckner wrote in a letter to residents on Friday about the matter.

Unless the jornolister left something out the cop didn't do it right. You have to call a DoW officer to dispatch injured wildlife and you have to get permission from the DoW to keep the carcass. They don't use pistols to dispatch injured deer and elk either. I think that explains why they didn't file a report.

Cops, shooting an elk in BOULDER? This is so unrepentant, so guaranteed to inflame that open air lunatic asylum, that i’m proud of these cops.
There is just something almost fine about it.
