The Washington Post is reporting that President Barack Obama is preparing to pull out all the stops in pushing his anti-gun agenda in what the newspaper calls “a far broader and more comprehensive approach” than the Clinton-era ban on semi-autos.
That ban expired in 2004 after a ten-year lifespan. Passage of the measure cost Democrats control of Congress in November 1994.
The moves will be sold as an effort to curb “gun violence,” but it appears there is much more in the president’s plan, including what the Post calls “measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers (and) track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database…”
“National database” just might sound like “national gun registration” to some firearms activists. The concept is almost certain to be toxic to the firearms community. Fear of impending gun restrictions has fueled a buying rush across the nation, and is reportedly swelling the ranks of gun rights organizations with thousands of new memberships.

The problem is not the states, but the counties. Almost every state has at least several counties which are red. I guess the red counties in say western PA could secede and join Ohio, making Ohio solidly red. Pretty soon, the big cities would become enclaves.

It seems pretty clearly stated here:

Sounds like the outlawing of all private sales and establishment of a database of who legally owns weapons, essentialy the same as the failed Canadian gun registry.
1. They don’t need an excuse. They have no respect for the Constitution, the law, or the safety of the average American that wants to defend themselves.
2. They will do it because they want absolute control and a citizenry that can be subjugated and not feared.
3. More people are killed each year in the US with knives and hammers than guns. Stop being deluded into thinking that all Americans must lose their right to protection because a small number of criminals misbehave. You are being fooled.
4. No criminal is EVER going to respect ANY gun law. Gun laws are only designed to control law abiding people.
Yes, and there is no evidence that even a single crime was prevented because of the multi-billion gun registry (which would likely be 20 times as costly in the US). The Canadian gun registry was born out of an incident in Quebec where a crazy old coot killed a police officer who came to his house on an investigation. The police knew he had guns but failed to take the proper precautions. Ignoring the facts, the governing Liberal party and the usual gaggle of leftist organizations used this as the rallying cry for the registration of all guns.
The reason that a gun registry does not work is two-fold. First, there are many people even in Canada who refused to register their guns, so reliance on the gun registry would give police officers a false sense of security. The police should always approach a situation on the assumption that one or more individuals may be armed. Second, it raises the risk of an excessive police response to what would otherwise be a routine call. If the police know you have a registered weapon, are they going to come to a noisy party complaint with their guns drawn? There was a tragedy in Canada some years ago (prior to the gun registry) where the police attempted a raid on a house which they believed contained weapons. They approached the house in the dark, wearing dark clothing, in an assault formation. The owner looked out and saw shadowy figures approaching his house, clearly armed, so he took out his own gun and went out on his front step to defend his property. He was shot and killed by the police. The problem? The police were at the wrong house. They should have been next door. If the police start using the ownership of guns as a pretence to treat the homeowner as a presumptive dangerous criminal, you will see more of this kind of incident.
And yes, the American police have killed innocent people who attempted to defend themselves when police approached their home, in the middle of the night, and attempted to gain entry without identifying themselves as police officers. This is from July 2012:

my guess would be most here will ignore their registration demands...Canadians did.
OTOH, our gubmint is likely more tyrannical than theirs, so maybe Bronco will offer free Obamaphones for those who turn in their neighbors and relatives.
IMHO, If the people on spending sprees spent 1/10th of what they’re now spending on guns on ammo on conservative candidate’s campaigns 6 months ago, we’d own the House and Senate.
That might work in upscale New York suburbs like Sandy Hook.
In my upscale Missouri neighborhood, my neighbor on one side is the senior partner of our region's largest law firm. My neighbor on the other side is a retired colonel. Across the street is a retired senior enlisted soldier married to a retired senior enlisted Marine. A little ways down is a retired sergeant major working for a major international defense contractor. Up the street is the owner of our county's second-largest bank. On a side street, there's a Missouri National Guard recruiter and another senior bank official, plus a retired upper-level GS civilian. And I'm not saying anything about the active duty military personnel who are generally O-5 or O-8 and above, or people who held those ranks before retirement and now work as senior GS civilians.
It would be easier to figure out how many people in my neighborhood don't have guns in their homes than who do have guns.
The percentage would be even higher in the trailer court a mile away from my house, or the rural areas five miles away, especially since it could easily take 20 to 30 minutes for the one or two sheriff's deputies on duty to get to a 911 call reporting a home invasion.
Gun-grabbers are crazy if they think they're going to win this battle outside the major cities and their suburbs.
I'm quite aware that O-8 would be a general officer. We have no generals in our neighborhood, but we do have a number of retired master sergeants and CSMs.
People are pissed off out here in fly-over Country. The Washington DC power players club keeps prodding and eventually they are gonna hit a tender spot and set off a stampede.
My fear is ‘he’ will do it by fiat (executive order), and thereby alleviate any congressmen any anguish on facing voters during the next election cycle.
I have a better idea. Find some patriots who have access to the databases and just change all the info.
What does that statement have anything to do with the debate over unconstitutional gun control?
Our current (and past) representative democracy consists of 535 inept, incompetent, bumbling fools, led by a radical socialist commie pig 0dumb0, and 6 doddering fools out of 9 on USSC. Our Declaration of Independence gives us the RIGHT, "That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it and to institute new Government...." We are very quickl approaching that tipping point, and I agree with JRandomFreeper that I will not bow down or kneel before a socialist/commie/fascist unlawful gubmint. Most of what the gubmint & 0dumb0 already do is unlawful & unconstitutional.
Registration is a necessary first step to confiscation.

They had exhausted all peaceful means to reclaim their rights. We have not. We still have the political process, boycotts, and civil disobedience. How many of you with itchy trigger fingers have ever really try any of those peaceful means?
If he does, it is time for impeachment proceedings to begin.
They are already doing it. It is just like Obamacare, they will do it because they feel they can. There could not be a single more shooting and they will still do it.
