Now is the time for real leadership and an end to counter-productive unilateral actions, says State Department spokeswoman
The United States on Wednesday urged Israel and the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table and resume, in earnest, long-dormant efforts to hammer out a comprehensive peace deal.
As we turn the calendar to 2013 now is the time for leaders on both sides to display real leadership, to focus on the work thats necessary to return to direct negotiations, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in remarks cited by AFP.
The US was asking both sides to clearly demonstrate that they are serious about achieving two states living side by side in peace and security, she said.
Nuland also called for an end to counter-productive unilateral actions, an apparent reference to the Palestinians successful bid in November to upgrade their status at the United Nations to nonmember observer state, and Israels subsequent punitive approval of thousands of housing units in East Jerusalem and in E1, a bitterly contested tract on the outskirts of the capital.
As President Barack Obama starting his second term in office, and with the Israeli elections less than three weeks away, Nuland said, both sides were entering a critical period.

Looks like Hillary will be sitting this one out.
Ii have a ;land for peace’ plan...
Lebanon,, Syria, Jordan and Egypt should divide their countries in half and give the half that borders Israel to Israel. If they did this as a way of showing good faith, I’m sure Israel would talk them...

A ‘land for peace’ plan:
Lebanon,, Syria, Jordan and Egypt should divide their countries in half and give the half that borders Israel to Israel.
If Arab countries did this as a way of showing good faith, I’m sure Israel would talk to them - and try very hard to work something out.
Go straight to h*ll, President Jihad.
The Palestinians have NOTHING to gain from peace.
They can display whatever they like,it will be the paradigm the society runs under that will determine the outcome.
"...to focus on the work thats necessary to return to direct negotiations...
See above
"...two states living side by side in peace and security,"
Peace and security,hhhmmmm.
F15 "Just need a world politician who is a pathological liar..."
Well that narrows it down!
Now where in the world would Satan find one of those?/s!
Interesting times...
This administration seems to feel that they can end this 60 year old mess by touchy feely admonitions and saying pretty please.
I get so tired of this faux diplomacy.

They ought to just rekindle the palesimians if they get frisky!
Welcome Civ!:)
