After my divorce in the 70's, I took my 3 kids to Niagara Falls every year. Children stayed free in the hotel...Maybe the Hilton....Anyways it was $20 a day for the 4 of us...$60 for a long weekend. And it was only 90 miles from home.

The wax museum, the museum with mummies and wolves, a shrine, Fort Niagara, Grand Island...and of course, the roar of the falls. Great place...

I was born and raised in Rochester, NY. We'd get up early on a Saturday morning, take the train to the zoo in Buffalo, eat the lunch my mother had packed for us, then get back on the train to Niagara Falls.

The only time we ever stayed in a hotel as kids, was when my parents took us to NY City on the train. We'd catch the midnight train out of Rochester on a Friday night, and get into NY City early the next morning. We'd eat breakfast at the auto-mat, then walk around the city until we could check into the hotel. We usually stayed at the Hotel Piccadilly or Edison Hotel overnight Saturday. We thought it was a treat to be able to watch the old horror movies on the black and white TV's in the hotel room. Then we'd take the train back home on Sunday.
