The day before Roku/Netflix arguably has its worst service failure, Roku's founder and CEO, Anthony Wood, appears on CNBC giving this unbelievably, poorly timed interview.

For us it’s both, not one replacing the other.

Cable just isn’t in the TV business, it’s into the internet service provider and internet phone business.
We have Roku over cable internet service.

Too bad the future is also the telcos charging more and more for less and less bandwidth. Those here who cried that net neutrality was evil are sure enjoying busting their caps on a couple netflix streams.

2 things:

First, the Roku was a POS in my opinion. There are an EXTREMELY limited number of codecs it will work with. I finally got fed up with it and bought a Western Digital Live and it is light years ahead of the Roku box. I have not found a video format yet that the WD box won't play... it will even mount and play iso images.

Secondly, broadband companies (read AT&T, Comcast) WILL have the last word on this. If streaming video starts cutting too deep, they will gladly retrieve their fees by jacking you on pay-per-bit usage.

I have a cabin in a remote area. Our definition of high tech is a candle and making hand puppet shadows. Next year we are considering narrating the show using our voices. We will probably call these “talkies”. Only problem is sore wrists when we fast forward through the commercials.

My wife and I hadn't even heard of Roku until we were Christmas shopping a couple of weeks ago, and bought an HD on a lark as an inexpensive Christmas gift to each other. I have to admit to being surprised. We disconnected it and took it to Mom's during our visit over the weekend, and she was so impressed, she ordered one on Amazon. So far, the service has been decent, and I'm personally predisposed to vegetate in front of the dozens of channels of mindless SchlockTV, myself. LOL

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

Netflix was down, not Roku. Netflix back up this morning.

I love my Roku and Netflix. Roku can add more channels like Netflix.

I do think that Internet streaming will be the future of TV, but it's going to require the following:

1. VERY fast download speeds in the 40 megabits/second range or higher for everybody.
2. Much bigger server farms to handle all the traffic.
3. Switching to IPv6 to handle all the additional DNS addressing from everybody streaming their TV programming to the home.
4. A complete and total rethink of how to deliver TV content to the home--the current cable/satellite delivery method using channels may have to be rendered obsolete.

It's a change that could take 15-20 years to complete.
