I always found it kind of humorous in retrospect that I would refer to California as "The Land of Fruit and Nuts" without a passing consideration of "the sign on my back", being from Massachusetts.

The cancer that is eating out our substance is spread throughout the fifty states, and must be eradicated from all of them..." summed the issue up well: If there is cancer in the body, cutting it out of one part generally doesn't cure it.
And that cancer is called "liberalism".
