Sen. Joe Manchin: Between Obama and the NRA, another path to stopping mass violence
Washington Post ^ | December 21, 2012 | Joe Manchin III

Posted on 12/23/2012 8:57:15 PM PST by neverdem

In the days after the horrific tragedy in Newtown, Conn., I made it clear that I believe it is time for us to move from rhetoric to action to prevent future acts of senseless mass violence.

Since then, much has been made of those comments — some of it accurately reflecting what I said, some not. Because I am an A-rated, lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and a proud defender of the Second Amendment, some people viewed my comments as a tipping point in the debate about guns in America.

The true tipping point, of course, is what happened in that elementary school on Dec. 14 — the unimaginable slaughter of 20 children and the teachers and staff members who were defending them. When children die tragically, it rips at our very hearts. Even in our grief, we demand a reckoning.

That reckoning is now upon us, and we owe it to those children and their families to take it seriously. As a nation, we must reconsider the treatment of the mentally ill. We must challenge a popular culture that accepts stomach-churning violence in our movies and video games. We must look at the use of high-capacity ammunition magazines and military-style assault weapons.

Committed gun owners like me can and must listen to reasonable ideas about preventing mass violence. But whatever steps we take must be comprehensive — and must bring the entertainment industry and mental health community to the table. We cannot snap our fingers, push one-track legislation that focuses exclusively on guns and pat ourselves on the back. Such an approach certainly won’t fare well in Congress. More important, it won’t fully address the problem...

• The United States has the highest gun ownership rate in the world — an average of 88 per 100 people. That puts it first in the world for gun ownership — and even the number two country, Yemen, has significantly fewer – 54.8 per 100 people

• But the U.S. does not have the worst firearm murder rate — that prize belongs to Honduras, El Salvador and Jamaica. In fact, the U.S. is number 28, with a rate of 2.97 per 100,000 people

• Puerto Rico tops the world’s table for firearms murders as a percentage of all homicides — 94.8%. It’s followed by Sierra Leone in Africa and Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean

Sen. Manchin: “Vote for me, ‘cause I totally care about children and sh*t.”
To self ‘I’m gonna ride this monkey right into my next term!’

That’s all I hear.

3500 murdered children EVERY DAY in the US. 1.27 million abortions every year. What does that convey about the value of human life?

I think the liberal disease is called ‘magic thinking’, as in posting a ‘gun free zone’ sign will deter a person bent on slaughtering people. If you will notice, even this asshat Joe mentioned armed response as slowing the perp or ending the attack, but then the bastard switched to the magic thinking and went skipping off into never-never land.

“I don’t know anyone that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. I mean, these are things that need to be talked about.”

another knee jerk idiot trying to confuse people with hunting instead of tyranny prevention...

Well, on top of that, his statement wasn't even accurate as applied to hunting. People who hunt sounders -- dozens! -- of feral hogs know they'd better take something heavier than a varminter, in case they run into Hogzilla's younger and faster cousin. Hunters can also run into packs of canids, everything from coyotes to feral dogs (which were everywhere on Eleuthera in the Bahamas when I was there) to wolves. In parts of Africa, congresses of baboons are occasionally a threat when their numbers run up or food gets low.

But you're right, this wasn't about hunting in 1787, or now.

LOL, you're going to wind up on the old Left-wing sh*tlist along with Pat Buchanan.

Those guys absolutely do not want an "honest discussion about race" ... and crime.

By the way, during the "crack wars" that ran from about 1986 to 1995, the annual number of murders in the U.S. was over 24,000 /all weapons and all reasons. Half the dead were YBM's, 91% of them offed by other YBM's ... who were also murdering out to the tune of 50% of all non-black victims. So their bag was 3/4 of the murders in the United States, committed by 1/2 of the 12% or so of the country who were black.

Yeah, that's 6% of the G-pop doing 75% of the murders. And if you add the age factor, it was about 1/4 of the total number of black men .... and not even a large fraction of the young men, who were responsible. No wonder they don't want to talk about crime.

You’re letting them define the terms of debate!

They aren't debating. They're doing what Soledad O'Brien did with Don Kates or someone she had on -- doing a weeping, wailing, blouse-tearing, wild-woman-at-the-funeral tantrum all over the other side: "You're so MEEEAAAANNNN! WHYYYYYYYY?!!" and so on.

Remember, the Left never "debates". They brawl, they eye-gouge, they use saps.

The hunting canard, the over-ten-rounds magazine canard, all the useless private opinion canards held by idiots versus the irrefutable RIGHT affirmed to us in the US Constitution to bear arms. No hunting, no limits, just rights.

Drop the max mag limit to 10. What are you gonna do when a madman takes TWO pistols to the slaughter? You gonna ban more than one gun per person? That’s what all you gun grabbers want. Hell, you want to ban them alltogether.

To self ‘I’m gonna ride this monkey right into my next term!’

Unfortunately, Manchin's next term begins in ten days and lasts until January 3, 2019. That ship has sailed.

We are not going to have the same form of government in January 2019 as we have now.

"A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half [communist] and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of [Marxism] will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South."

Sad to say the previous Republican candidate, Raese, had his head firmly parked up his ass. While he’s a successful business man, he’s a neophyte at politics. There was an issue that was extremely politically lethal for Manchin that the man could have utilized without getting his hands dirty.

He didn’t.

Add a spineless divided Republican party and it’s unlikely a Republican will replace Manchin.

.......as in posting a ‘gun free zone’ sign will deter a person bent on slaughtering people

And the idea that stopping the sale of 'assault weapons' will somehow prevent the use of the ones already in circulation.

Idiots

If the citizens are forced to give up semi-autos and “high-capacity” magazines, then so should all the law enforcement agencies. The gun-grabbers’ mantra is that semi-autos are for the sole purpose of killing a large number of people at one time. Well, then, the obvious question — since the gun-grabbers think it’s such a good idea for the police to have semi-autos — is just what large number of people are the police looking to kill at one time? Who specifically comprise that group of people?

Joe, Joe, Joe. You are an ignoramus. For one thing, what you are talking about is a magazine, not a clip. Moreover, the Second Amendment is NOT about hunting. But, you know that already. So, you have outed yourself as just another whore politician.
