House Speaker John A. Boehner has offered to push any fight over the federal debt limit off for a year, a major concession that would deprive Republicans of leverage in the budget battle but is breathing new life into stalled talks over the year-end fiscal cliff.
The offer came Friday, according to people in both parties familiar with the talks, as part of the latest effort by Boehner (R-Ohio) to strike a deal with President Obama to replace more than $500 billion in painful deficit-reduction measures set to take effect in January.
With the national debt already bumping up against the $16.4 trillion cap set last year, Congress risks a government default unless it acts to raise the debt ceiling in the next few months.
Many Republicans had argued that party leaders should use the threat of default to demand additional spending cuts from Obama. But Boehners offer would head off that potentially nasty fight at least until the end of next year.

Helloooooooo . . . . . . . . the Republic has been lost for the last 4 years. You just figuring this out??
Do you need more coffee?
Remember yesterday we had people on another thread claim that Boehner did not “cave” when he proposed the “tax on millionaires”?
I want to hear their PhonyCon RINO spin on this one
Boehner CAVED. Obama just ate his shorts.
The GOP is now just Democrat-Lite
That's about the size of it.
You really ARE an optimist, aren't you?
We see it as incompetence, but it is really that he is being blackmailed having some very dirty history he doesnt want outed.
That’s why its been so damaging not to use the committee structure and other normal legislative processes. Boehner thinks leading means he has to be in front of a microphone. That’s dumb. We are so far from having our best and brightest as our political leaders.
How many times have you said this in the past 18 months?
Buck Foehner
You’re right. No deal sounds like a good deal.
I have an idea. How about he forms a sort of, I don’t know, “Super Committee” that puts in some kind of arbitrary deadline to settle budget issues, and, if it doesn’t, then only things that Republicans care about will be affected (like massive defense cuts and huge tax increases implemented)?
Man, I should be in charge. I’m so brilliant.
Any representative that votes for boner to be speaker is an enemy of conservative principles and should be challenged in the next primary.
Agreed, this would be contrary to what he said in his press conference.
“Boehner is a cowardly piece of work.”
You give him way too much credit!
It won’t be long before Bonehead surrenders on gun control and
amnesty, as well.
This is the only scenario that makes sense to me. They've got dirt on Boehner and are using it to blackmail him. It's got to be it because no one could possibly be this stupid. I can only hope that enough of the GOP House members vote down a debt ceiling increase. Please let your Congressman know how you feel about this and about Boehner in general.
