Boehner offers to take debt limit off the table

House Speaker John A. Boehner has offered to push any fight over the federal debt limit off for a year, a major concession that would deprive Republicans of leverage in the budget battle but is breathing new life into stalled talks over the year-end “fiscal cliff.”

The offer came Friday, according to people in both parties familiar with the talks, as part of the latest effort by Boehner (R-Ohio) to strike a deal with President Obama to replace more than $500 billion in painful deficit-reduction measures set to take effect in January.

With the national debt already bumping up against the $16.4 trillion cap set last year, Congress risks a government default unless it acts to raise the debt ceiling in the next few months.

Many Republicans had argued that party leaders should use the threat of default to demand additional spending cuts from Obama. But Boehner’s offer would head off that potentially nasty fight — at least until the end of next year.

In view of what you wrote above, what do believe is left for conservatives in America? What would you do, for yourself and those close?

I don't know. In the past, I generally felt the public was mostly with is if/when we clearly explained what we stand for. Now I don't. Now I think it is pretty clear the a majority of the silent non voters ("adults" as pollsters call them), are actually even more supportive of Obama and the nanny state agenda.

I'd guess the public will move further and further left - at least until such time as those policies collapse the economy. The ability of Fed, banks, politicians, etc, to kick the can down the road is remarkable, so my hunch is we are just on the path of slow, steady decline.

As to political party's in the US. Well, they are designed to win elections. We are a 2 party system like it or not, and because of that the Republican party will reposition itself in a manner it thinks give it the best shot to win. The GOP will toss the social issues overboard is my best guess. I think you already see some of that from people like Sarah Palin and other tea party leaders who have made it a habit of offering support to Ron Paul and his followers.

I think the markets and Western economies are deeply unhealthy and are all basically in the same boat. Social welfare states like ours can't last. For conservatives I'd say be prepared for the possibility that things accelerate downward faster than most people anticipate. Politically though, we conservatives are just going to have to deal with knowing we are genuinely in the minority at the present time.

Obama appears to have the upper hand.
Bohner just looks he's playing ‘I really want to make a deal’ to the TV viewers and MSM, trying to gain some sympathy.

I never needed a poll to tell me how this one goes :

“ Which would you rather congress do to control the budget deficit ?:
A) Cut your medicare now?
B) Raise the age at which you can get medicare ~ 10 years out to ~ 68, and you can go on O-care till then, and work three more years?
C) Raise rich guys like Romney and Buffets taxes?”

But the R primary was fun. Playing make believe always is. Remember when they said they wouldnt accept 10 to 1 spending cuts to tax increases? (even though the tax increases are automatic)

When Romney got to the general he just kept saying he will let 'congress' figure out what to cut in spending, with his specified tax cuts. That was pretty good campaigning strategy. What could go wrong?

We must also take notice of how hard Boehner fights against the Conservatives
contrasted to how willing he is to get along with the Liberals. He will fight us
to the grave and not give an inch but is willing to concede to Democrats for posterity.
