I guess what I’m getting at is a long held suspicion that home environments that while not meeting the definition of abusive can through instability, domestic intranquility and benign neglect result in children developing patterns of antisocial behavior.

True. And wonderful caring kind loving families who were well nurtured with sucessful children can have one real mentally sick kid. Sociopathy, Axis I you name it. Seen it over and over. There is less control than you think.

There are a number of people here who see mental illness as mostly a moral issue and parenting issue.
Mental illness is mental illness. Behavioral personality disorders can be somewhat modified,but I will tell you that it is difficult.
