NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut/AP) — CBS News is reporting that 27 people are dead, including 18 students, after a mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The gunman is among the dead.

CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.

The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.

CBS News reports that a second person is in custody and that SWAT is now investigating the home of the suspect.

A witness tells WFSB-TV that a second man was taken out of the woods in handcuffs wearing a black jacket and camouflage pants and telling parents on the scene, “I did not do it.”

Fox Connecticut reports that the shooting began in the kindergarten classroom.

“It’s just a bad situation,” Newtown Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Stoyak told CBS 2.

Two students and a teacher were also injured in the shooting and they were taken to Dansbury Hospital, spokeswoman Diane Burke told CBS News York.

How about this, No. It’s not proper. Here, is some truth about gun control. People, kill people. This happened in China. What next? ban rocks, sticks, etc.

Sorry if this re-posts, but here is a clear proof guns don’t kill people. People kill people. For those that think taking our guns away from us will stop violence. This evil, murdering, wimp, took the lives of innocent children. Kinda like the man in this story also. What next? Ban knives, rocks, and sticks

That will be an interesting aspect of the story. The guy lived in another state, so there could be some question as to how he sent his kid to this school.

But his mother worked in the school. Was she the child’s legal guardian, thus allowing the child to attend the school she taught at, in another school from the parent?

Was the shooting because of some dissension about the child — either the boy wanted more control of the child, or the mother was threatening to make him take more control, and he thought this would solve the problem?

Where is the child’s mother? Did she leave the child, and that’s how the child is at this school? Or does she live in that area, and is THAT why the child was at the school? Is this a domestic squabble between the mother and father, and the grandmother got in the way and took sides and the father is lashing out?

A sad day. One thing that is clear — banning guns from schools has not seemed to have stopped a single person from taking a gun into schools and shooting people.

No way of knowing whether a teacher with a gun might have stopped this with less bloodshed. But it seems clear there couldn’t have been any MORE bloodshed than what occurred.

This feels like the VT case, where we’ll here that people wanted to help, but had no way to help, and were left barracading them selves or pretending to be dead and hoping that the police would eventually stop waiting around and actually do something.

Because, and again we don’tknow, but traditionally in these cases, the police stay out of harm’s way until they are sure things are under control, then they move in.

Go ahead and cite one.

Andrea Yates? Seems like the type who would have homeschooled.

Clearly we need to shut down public schools. That’s the only place where these mass slayings take place, and it’s no wonder in view of the fact for decades we’ve herded children together and taught them they are little more than glorified apes. Godless public schools are a real problem.

So true, video games provide an outlet for individuals prone to violence so they don’t act out their violent fantasies in real life, if anything, video games prevent violence.

Jared Lee Loughner (Tucson,AZ) - 23 yo white male.

Adam Lanza (Newtown, CT) - 20 yo white male

James Eagan Holmes (Aurora, CO) - 24 yo white male.

Jacob Tyler Roberts (Oregon mall) - 22 yo white male

Eric David Harris (Colulumbine, CO) - 19 yo white male

Dylan Bennet Klebold (Columbine, CO) - 17 yo white male

Anyone detect a pattern here? It’s time to check these shooters’ medical histories for psychotropic drugs.

I thought of Beslan, too. :*(

I am glad God is just, and the gunman is in hell but the innocents are in Heaven.

Warmest greetings to both of you as well.

I still remember the morning of 911. My wife cried. I tried to figure out from the news what had happened. So I know people do approach these things differently. You are entitled to your opinion, and I am entitled to reserve my judgment until we learn more.

Peace,

SR

“Removing insane people, such as this shooter, from the population in advance, will.”

That seems to be a proper solution to some of these type things. Problem I find with it is that certain people are going to set “standards” that determine sanity, and those certain people will have their own agendas, which could lead to the “removing” of people they find opposing their particular politics.

The solution is concealed carry, maybe even mandatory concealed carry for teachers and other adults on school campuses. Better than watching a lunatic slaughter kids while a teacher can do about nothing.

I don’t like the idea of “removing” people from society that have not yet committed a crime by evaluating their potential for committing a crime. I think there may have been a novel or movie made using that theme.

With concealed carry, the social misfits will be “removed” from society when they pull a stunt like this fellow did and a good guy with a gun eliminates the threat.

Did she?

And can you explain why Freepers are so willing to defend a school system that Bill Ayers considers to be the crucial weapon of leftism in America?

If ever a reason to homeschool????

20 families have just lost children, 6 more have lost family members, and you all look at it as an opportunity to extol the virtues or homeschooling. And it only took 7 whole posts. Why not come out and advocate rescinding the 2nd amendment while you are at it.

The solution is concealed carry,

I’m not sure that’s the answer because I’m not sure I want a bunch of people who took a few courses on weapon safety etc shooting during such a chaotic scene/situation. I kinda believe you need military or police experience to be able to handle a situation like that. I’m gonna get flamed for saying this but I believe that you should have to be 25 or be presently in the military to be able to buy an assault weapon. I’m sorry I just don’t like the idea of some 19 yr old punk getting an AR-15. But even though I would want that I wouldn’t want it done because it’d give the liberals an inch...and when they have an inch.....

And I thought the gun-grabbers were quick to use this as an opportunity to demonize gun owners. Some of you so-called homeschool advocates are just as bad on demonizing every single negative story about public or even private schools.

It is part of the liberal mentality to never let a good crisis go to waste. Never mind the tragic loss of life, push the personal agenda. I dare you homeschoolers to ask your clergyman what he thinks of your comments, actions, and attitudes.

Gun owners are gonna have to survive a storm over this one!

This is such a REAL tragedy, it’s a total shame that people will run out to make a political issue out of it before the bodies are even in the ground and cold.

Here’s what’s going to happen: (you saw it here first)

With this shooting, they could only go after high-capacity magazines, since the animal used handguns. They won’t move against handguns, because that would be far too heavy of a ‘lift’ politically.

Ultimately, I expect they will try to politically just sort of lump all of the shootings together, and go for a far reaching approach that includes the evil black rifles, high-cap mags, and whatever else that’s on their shitlist to make our lives miserable as gun owners.

What’s sad is NONE OF IT would prevent, stop, or even slow down these psychopaths from killing people. Hell, most all of these shootings occur in “Gun Free Zones” after all. The guy that killed all of those people today was so determined it seems, I have no doubt that he would have built a bomb or something if a firearm wouldn’t have been an option for him.

The incident today seriously has my wife and I wanting to pull ALL of our kids out of public schools. They are all just one psychopath or human time bomb away from being killed in the same way those poor kids were. If someone is going to go after one of my kids with a gun, I damn well want to be able to defend them. Schools are just bad places anymore. Hardly anything good happens there!

You dont think that the libtard media is going to take about 30 seconds to start screaming about gun control over this?

We're going to get wall to wall antigun activism and calls for bans.

IIRC, school shootings were the catalyst for the CA AWB ban and Australia's gun ban.

Don't let them near shopping malls, movie theaters, or churches either because there has never ever been a mass shooting at any of those places, ever./sarc
