SALINAS, Calif.- The Alisal Union School District confirmed Monday it decided to rename a new school in the Monte Bella neighborhood after a famous bandit, who is seen as a hero by some Mexican-Americans.
Tiburcio Vasquez was convicted of murder and hung for the crime in the 1800's. He was born in Monterey to a prominent family. According to several online sources, like Wikipedia, he organized a gang, robbed travelers, had gunfights with police and killed three innocent bystanders during a robbery in San Benito County.
Vasquez is already "honored" today by two place names in southern California.
According to CaliforniaHistory.com, Vasquez was something of a celebrity, a hero to hundreds of his fellow Spanish-speaking citizens. Scores of visitors brought him flowers, wines, notions and other tokens of esteem to where he was in jail during his trial. An appeal for clemency was denied by Governor Romualdo Pacheco. On March 19,1875, in San Jose, California, Tiburcio Vasquez, bandido and folk hero, calmly met his death by hanging.

On a side note, the wife and I visited Billy the Kid’s grave in New Mexico last October. No statues of the Kid though.
It does mean dumbass or “prick” or “coward” etc in the vernacular depending where used and how.
But the insult is derived from a word literally meaning a hanging pubic hair.
This was explained to me 3 decades ago by a 2nd generation Cuban now living in Miami who’s dad was the Spanish ambassador to Havana before it fell and who used words like “cono” and “carajo” in every utterance

Um, not to be a party pooper, but no. There are no towns or counties in CA named after Joaquin Murrietta. San Joaquin county and the city of San Joaquin are the spanish versions of St Joachim. Not saying I agree with naming something after a criminal, but you gotta get your facts straight.
There is a town, not to mention an ex-nuke plant named after the guy and many other local spots through out the state named after him. I really don’t care if you believe it or not.
Not trying to pick a fight, I’m just curious. Which nuke plant? There are only 3, San Onofre, Ranco Seco (defunct), and Mt Diablo. I’ m just curious because I’m a life long born and raised valley native 50+ years. I live about 20 miles east of San Joaquin. And yes I do see daily the thrashing of our culture by the criminal class, so I’m no open borders advocate. But other than the annual Joaquin Murrietta ride in the Three Rocks Panoche Creek area (remote area), I just haven’t heard of these things.
