“The reason it appears that we [Christians] assign a ‘uniquely extreme sinfulness’ to it [homosexual acts] is primarily because the surrounding culture has made it a hot-button issue; liars, drunks and thieves aren’t organizing and trying to have their behavior given the church’s mark of approval.”
.
BINGO!
Oral stimulation isn’t sex. Sex is a very specific thing. Penetrative intercourse involving a real (not simulated) penis.
I wonder who’s been grooming little 15 year old Taylor...
“Conservatives and Christians have, IMO, assigned a uniquely extreme sinfulness to homosexual acts that the Bible does not really support”.
Sure it does, in Genesis 18 - 19. The term “sodomy” is derived from Sodom.
“And the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrha brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven”.
There was a more “innocent” time when such a thing was limited to certain female coaches of girls’ high school sports teams, and only rumored at that. Times such as when I was in high school in the late seventies and early eighties.
God only knows now.
Free speech for the perverted ones, but not for the heterosexuals.
Not exactly.
A mortal sin must include three elements. 1) Grave matter, 2) Full knowledge that the matter is grave and 3) full consent of the will to commit the act. Fornication is a grave matter.
Catechism of the Catholic Church:

“I think a more interesting discussion is that the Bible does not condemn homosexuality as greatly more evil than other sexual sins.”
Hmmmm...
“They gave up God: and therefore God gave them upto be the playthings of their own foul desires in dishonouring their own bodies. These men deliberately forfeited the truth of God and accepted a lie, paying homage and giving service to the creature instead of to the Creator, who alone is worthy to be worshipped for ever and ever, amen. God therefore handed them over to disgraceful passions. Their women exchanged the normal practices of sexual intercourse for something which is abnormal and unnatural. Similarly the men, turning from natural intercourse with women, were swept into lustful passions for one another. Men with men performed these shameful horrors, receiving, of course, in their own personalities the consequences of sexual perversity.” - Romans 1
As a personal sin - one person doing something wrong - homosexuality sends you to hell to no greater degree than any other sin. But it is singled out as a sign of those who utterly reject God, and a society that accepts it is a society that utterly rejects God and asks God to judge them. Or us.
In the 60s and 70s, and certainly at any date prior to the 60s, it would have been inconceivable to have any state in America approve of homosexuals marrying. I’m filled with dread for this country, not because I’m squeamish about homosexuals, but because I recognize the change in our country’s morals and understand that our acceptance of homosexuality is like giving God the Middle Finger Salute. And I’m not looking forward to being in a country that God decides to punish...
“Catholics say” . . . what?
Consult and quote the Catechism or stay clear from this subject.
Send him off to a reeducation camp. Our Glorious Leader has spoken.
Utter ignorance or is it senility?
“I hate fascist Nazis.”
Oh, you mean Democrats.
Be sure to tell your Daughter that, she will be very popular by the time she gets to JR High School.
The reason it appears that we assign a 'uniquely extreme sinfulness' to it is primarily because the surrounding culture has made it a hot-button issue; liars, drunks and thieves aren't organizing and trying to have their behavior given the church's mark of approval.
I would not entirely disagree... But Sherman Logan has a point which I would say comes from Lev. 18... 'The sins that would cause the land to vomit you out'. Because they are listed as such, they become exclusive and of a 'higher' class - And historically, at least in America, I think the passage has defined that which is unpardonable abomination.
It is unfortunate to look at that chapter and see how very far our once great country has fallen. We cannot be far from that act of 'vomiting out'.
@Sherman Logan: I would differ from you only in seeing that historically in America, those sexual sins were once abominable, to include heterosexual adultery, and sex before marriage. I am of the last generation that knew what was, and I fear my admonitions given to my children have fallen on deaf ears.
But then, My mother's admonitions to me fell on deaf ears too - it is my generation that knew right from wrong, and chose the wrong. But having known the right, having experienced a time gone by, we were able to see our mistake and try to return.
My children, I fear (their generation) do not even know the difference.
I had a “gender-questioning” woman try to fire me for not calling her by her “male” name.
What a world.
One of the reasons for that is that it is a sin that involves more than one person; and the other person may not always be as willing. Another reason stems from history: the taking of children for sexual purposes, or making them temple prostitutes from early childhood, which was more common in the middle east when the Bible was written, and is still practiced in many parts of Asia. These are heinous acts.
See post 36.
That's an excellent resource all in one place. Thanks for posting.
I personally favor the death penalty for any adult over the age of 26 who sexually penetrates a child under the age of 13. And which group is statistically more likely to do so? Care to guess?
Parents gamble when they give children androgynous names.
