ATLANTA -- Notre Dame, the Tide rolls for thee.
Alabama rallied twice in the second half to down Georgia 32-28 in the SEC Championship game at the Georgia Dome on Saturday, all but assuredly earning a shot at the No. 1 Irish in the BCS title tilt on Jan. 7.
Down three with five and a half minutes to play, Alabama QB AJ McCarron threw a 45-yard pass to Amari Cooper for with 3:15 to play. The drive took four plays.
In what has become two teams swinging anvils at each other all afternoon, Georgia blew an 11-point lead only to restore its advantage early in the fourth quarter, leading Alabama 28-25 as the teams have three 100-yard rushers on the day between them.
The third quarter began as an utter disaster for Alabama, as Georgia seemed poised to vanquish demons after collapsing against LSU in this spot last year. It opened the second half with a 75-yard drive to a Todd Gurley 3-yard touchdown run and a 14-10 lead.
Then the Georgia special teams continued its rout in this affair, blocking an Alabama field goal attempt with Alec Ogletree returning it 55 yards for a stunning score and a 21-10 advantage midway through the third.

One of the best games I’ve seen in a long time....darn shame UGA went brain-dead there at the end.
Michigan State (away), Michigan, Stanford, Oklahoma (away), Southern Cal (away) . . . the Irish were underdogs or had serious doubters in all 5. They won all 5. A “decent year”?!?!? I’d say 12-0 with the a top-ranked scoring defense and 5th ranked rushing defense (Georgia’a was 69th) is better than “decent.” And if you think the Gipper is not going to suit up, you don’t know Notre Dame.
That makes my case. Thanks.
Too high? Helmet to helmet hit on a player not even involved in the action of the return on the interception...the AL d-lineman will be suspended for the BCS Final.
Well, it would be nice if the schools’ athletic directors were brave enough, and honorable enough, to schedule them on their own. Some schools do . . . and by playing the best, they get better.
I think you are correct. Notre Dame is superior and has been superior to all SEC schools for at least 20 years. I just hope they don’t beat up on my Tide too much. They are not only the third youngest group of players in college football this year, but they are beat up and have so many players out with season ending injuries. I am amazed they have made it this far. I hope Notre Dame will have mercy. RTR
In fact, I am trying to think of the all the UF games over the years that were played out of state non-conference, I can only think of a few, I know in the 80s they did play USC in a home-and-home series, and I know they actually played Rutgers in Giants Stadium (I was actually at that game).
I agree with you here. They've been handing out 15 yds for love taps, and this goes by the boards? I think the refs were distracted by the interception return. I can only surmise that the AL player was savvy to this and made his move.
The Crimson Tide's theme song, "Yea, Alabama," contains the line, "Remember the Rose Bowl." Could this be the Rose Bowl game in question? The Tide also tied Stanford in the '27 Rose Bowl game and handed the USC Trojans their first Rose Bowl loss in 1946.
I will say, however, that there is one area in which Notre Dame is clearly superior, because they live and breathe under one handicap that most of its opponents do not: a belief that excellence in football and academics are compatible. And other schools resent them for it. ND gives 4-year scholarships, too. Saban gives 1 year scholarships. SEC fans are actually saying ND has an unfair advantage and are outraged that ND has players who actually go to school for all 4 years so they can graduate. It's just not fair! And believe me, there is no underwater basket-weaving at ND. Nor remedial reading. Every freshman takes calculus. But, the high standard is good for college football. The resentment isn't.
Sorry so many of your guys are beat up. Making excuses already? I should think that with the sheer depth Bama has on the bench, you'd have no worries. But, yes, we will have mercy. When we are about to run up the score from your two yard line at game's end, we'll show a little class and take a knee. I doubt that Bama would do the same.
I'm a USC Trojans fan and most definitely not an SEC fan.
Go, Alabama!
Yeah well, it figures. I always root against USC, too. But, the fact of the matter is, Troy is in flames. Whatever happens in the BCS Championship game, the destruction of Troy was far more important. Go Irish!
OMG .. just now saw the score .. ‘embarrassment’ is an understatement !
But Troy wil rise again--and to even greater heights. Recall the legends of Aeneas and Brutus of Troy.
GO, TROJANS!
Mr. Chips, you obviously don’t watch any Bama games. In most of our games this year, we’ve put our 2nd string in immediately after half time and our 3rd string in for the fourth quarter. And last week against our hated rival, Auburn, our 3rd sting was not allowed to score (the fans were wanting to take it to 56-0, but Coach Saban would not allow them to do it.). Why the criticism of Alabama just because you are for Notre Dame? Why not say these are two great universities with 2 outstanding football programs ...both with probably the richest tradition in football history. It should be a great game!! I’m a proud graduate of the University of Alabama. Love the University and got a great education there. But I like Notre Dame too..it’s a great University. Roll Tide!
Blam, they could never keep the student body from doing the Rammer Jammer cheer. I believe when I was a student there, Hootie Ingram (AD) tried to ban it, so the band could not play it and the cheer leaders could not lead it. But the student section always sang the band’s part and led it until it filled the stadium. I’m not a person who uses the the word “Hell” unless I’m talking about Heaven and Hell. But being a Bama graduate, I do love this cheer. Roll Tide.
Uh huh. See you in South Bend.
