As I understand it, GWB doubled the debt in eight years, and BHO increased it in his first term by as much as GWB did in both terms.

Bush's debt was largely a result of 9-11, of which this failure to act may have played a large part.
In spite of that, in January 2007 which was the last time we had a GOP President and Congress, the deficit was about 165 billion and shrinking. That was when the Dem controlled Congress replaced the GOP controlled Congress. How have things gone since?

You’re not missing anything at all—Bush was a spendthrift as well. However, GW is long out of office, and Obama is spending at twice the rate. That is not Bush’s fault. Obama is attempting to bankrupt the USA.
GWB looks a lot better by comparison than BHO, based on what you posted. FWIW, 80% of the debt increase between 2001-2009 happened when Democrats controlled one or both houses of Congress.
