Gingrich: House Republicans should stop negotiating with President Obama
The Daily Caller ^ | 11/29/2012 | Alexis Levinson

Posted on 11/29/2012 9:19:06 AM PST by sheikdetailfeather

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that House Republicans should stop negotiating with President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats on the fiscal cliff, saying that by doing so, they give Obama all of the leverage in the talks.

“One of the things I would say to House Republicans is to get a grip,” Gingrich said in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.

“They are the majority. They’re not the minority,” he said, enunciating the words as if explaining the concept to someone who did not understand it. “They don’t need to cave in to Obama; they don’t need to form a ‘Surrender Caucus.’”

“So my number one bit of advice to the congressional Republicans is simple: Back out of of all of this negotiating with Obama. The president is overwhelmingly dominant in the news media. You start setting up the definition of success finding an agreement with Obama, you just gave Obama the ability to say to you, ‘Not good enough,’” Gingrich said.

Oops. Too late, Newt. As I write this, Mitt Romney is sitting down to lunch with the Pres. Guess who’s getting stuck with the bill?

“Does Newt think the republican leadership (or anyone else) is going to listen to him?”

They SHOULD listen to him. He’s RIGHT. It was the GOP that tossed Newt out of the House. Tom DeLay and others.

And if Mittens was as angry and vendictive to Obama as he was to Newt and the others - HE’d be prez right now. But NOooooooo.

That’s another thing - totally off topic. WHY is Mittens going to lunch with The Won? Sickening.

What a collective bunch of inept losers. Some basic rules of negotiation: (1) you don’t give away your negotiating position before the negotiations commence; (2) you speak with a single voice; (3) you define the debate on your terms, not theirs. e.g. “we won’t agree to tax increases on anyone” vs. “we want tax cuts for everyone, even the rich”.

Bush was warned when he caved into the Dems demands that the tax cuts would be time limited, that this would come back to haunt the GOP. The Dems and media always cast the debate in terms of the GOP wanting tax cuts for the wealthy, when the debate is really that the Dems want tax increases. The Stupid Party really is.

Easy, They are all part of the same club, and all that matters is that the club stay intact, regardless of the outcome and effects on the Taxpayers, who the last time I looked does not have a Union or Lobbying wing to Bribe and Shower with exotic gifts the Public Servants duly elected to Public Office, whereas Big Corps and Public Employees do. The sole purpose of our Congress over the last 50 years is to do the bidding for the Ruling Class, Wall Street, Bankers at the direct expense of the Taxpayers, They run the show.

I hope Boehner and the quislings will listen to Gingrich. I believe Gingrich learned his lesson well from when he led the GOP "surrender caucus" in 1996 that caved to the scumbag Clinton.

“Is this the same Newt that was criticizing Romney for his “gift” comments?”

Newt has been known to be an equal-opportunity criticizer, so no surprise there.

Look, it’s possible he thought it was *strategically* wrong for Mitt to make the comments he made that got into the public arena.

Strategy is one thing, actual substance is another.

That aside, what difference does that make to the point Newt is making? I agree with his point.

And I’ll go one better...there is no negotiation with Obama going on. Because Obama isn’t negotiating, he’s propagandizing. The only negotiations are among Republicans who are negotiating with themselves in the news media.

YEP - what YOU said. It is like WE the People do not have ANY representation in DC once they start giving away the farm. I am so sick to my stomach when the GOP does this. Get that darn McCainiac and lightfoot Lyndsey off our stage. Already giving in on the Rice thing - tax cuts and anything else the Dems want.

ZOMG! You mean politicians lied to us?! (/sarcasm)

has it sunk in yet that neither party in any branch or level of government care what any of us think? If the dems had the votes they would repeal the entire bill of rights tomorrow. The GOP would immediately denounce this as too extreme and offer their plan to phase it out over two years instead.

What I hope (more than truly suspect) is that these guys are saying this crap merely to stop the scumbag Democrat newsrooms from painting them as "intransigent" and "unwilling to compromise". That is, I'm hoping the talk by some Republicans about tax hikes being "on the table" is a public relations puff and nothing more. As far as I'm concerned, let's go over the cliff rather than cave.

The Republicans should ALREADY be talking about how "intransigent" Ubama is, and they should be shouting to the heavens that Ubama is "failing to lead". You KNOW the scumbag Democrat newsrooms are focused on how they can smear the GOP House, so the pubs better launch a brutal counteroffensive immediately and repeat the mantra, "Ubama's fault, Ubama's fault, Ubama's fault..."

There’s no such thing a compromising with Obama. His only position is “Here’s what I want, take it or leave it”. If the Pubs refuse they are accused of “refusing to compromise”.

With all due respect to both you and Mitt, his lunch with O while seeming silly (yet, it’s socially correct to accept an invite to the WH, and Mitt is THAT). to us is not going to have any substantive effect. Mitt holds no cards in this “struggle”.
