Much of today’s U.S. society does not respect the military and those that disrespect our military men and women are increasing in numbers.

I have a copy of the National Geographic Explorer documentary Arlington: Field of Honor, which chronicles the history and heritage of Arlington National Cemetery. There's a fifteen minute segment that deals with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Tomb Guards. It shows just a fraction of the rituals that they go through to honor those they watch over. This is actually my favorite part of the whole documentary. I have a great-uncle who is MIA from World War Two, so this has a personal connection for me.

A few months ago I let one of my coworkers borrow the DVD. When he brought it back, he said that segment was he least favorite, for he could not understand the military's obsession with rituals. I almost felt sorry for him, because that really shows a lack of understanding and comprehension about the military and its heritage.
