Former Hostess workers in Rocky Mount 'relieved' at plant closing (Can't get much dumber)

Several former workers at a Hostess Brands plant in Rocky Mount said Friday they were relieved after the company filed for bankruptcy, seeking to close its operations.

The closings will mean the loss of about 18,500 jobs overall.

“They’ve been holding this over our head for a long time and now it’s here,” said Lamont Phillips, an oven operator and the president of the local union. “They had to do it.

“I don’t have to deal with that anymore. The things that they were trying to do to us, it wasn’t fair.

“They always hold that over our heads, that they’ll close it down. So, I’m like, ‘OK. Close it down.’”

And on Friday, Hostess did. The flag at a Hostess plant in Rocky Mount hung at half staff on Friday afternoon, and many former workers there hung around outside to talk about what had happened.

Hostess had offered an 8 percent pay cut, but Phllips said that wasn’t going to work for the employees.

“We’re not making a whole lot of money out here and then we got to take a pay cut like that. Then you got your health benefits going up,” he said. “They stopped paying into the pension fund. ….

“Yes....lot’s of great people in northern New England & upper NY. Not a lot of good jobs up this way, a bit difficult to make a living, but it’s still a nice lifestyle. I live in Mass, but I’m going to retire up here in central NH when the time comes. This part of the country still looks like the areas I grew up in back in the 70s. Best thing is there is no traffic in the off-season & yet I’m still just 2 hours to Boston if I need to get down there quick.”

I usually spend a few weeks a year up that way. I’m considering spending 3 months in upstate NY next summer if I can make the scheduling work out.
I haven’t been to Mass. or NH or Maine yet.
I spent a week in Pennsylvania. I’d be willing to pay up to $10.00 for the whole state but I’d want $9.95 back if I had to take Philly lol.

“Petroleum taste? Why, that’s only the very best of hyper-aerated hydrogenated cottonseed oil!”

Tastes just like gasoline...Don’t ask me how I know that lol.

You can’t go wrong visiting the coast of Maine. Beautiful place. If you like history Boston is a great city to visit. You can walk everywhere in Boston cause it’s so small.

The cheap gas...Ha, that’s an oxymoron.
The kind I used to siphon out of my old mans tractor when I had blown my gas allowance.

The Company was working with a 80M loan that was given to them to either work out a deal or close. Losing 8M a day during the strike its easy to see that the only golden parachute was borrowed money via a court order. Once the trademarks are sold and the equipment I really don’t think the management is walking away dragging bags of cash. The Unions were warned that time was short, even the Teamsters urged them to settle. Frankly they get what they asked for.

”So, I’m like, ‘OK. there's supposed to be a 'physical clift' or something coming; = So I’m like, Hey, let's demand more money and stuff, it's only fair, right?. Close 'em down and step over that clift, OK dude?

It's really worked good all across the west coast for almost ever. So let's keep moving foward; and, and besides, president Obama knows what he's doing for all the rest of us, So I'm like Just do it man!

We’ve seen quite a few interesting stories on pay and employment over the past year or so. As for sugary foods (cupcakes and the like), I tend to avoid ‘em.

So what’s the law about collecting unemployment comp? Does it vary by state? I would really love if the strikers were not able to collect.

Where I’ve seen it, Wonder was costlier than some sandwich breads, but nowhere near the top of the range.

The old slogan about “helping build strong bodies 12 ways” was probably more attractive back the 50s and 60s.

Everyday.. my drive to work hard slows a bit when I see the crap the takers are getting from me.

I have gone galt. my 6 figure income next year will be cut in half. I don’t need to work this hard. I don’t need to invest all that money in my company. I am kicking it in neutral and coasting through the rest of zero.

So the Teamsters did get a better bribe with double the routes. That’s probably why they urged the bakers to take a paycut huh?

Doesn't matter. Your statements since have proved that the company's demise is due to the unions. Better bribes, double routes, etc., have helped to drive the company into the ground over the past decade while management has struggled to tread water.

<Seriously I have to think that healthier diet awareness played a part. Didn’t Krispy Kreme take a major hit a few years ago?

I read that in one of the financial sites last night. Part of the problem with Hostess - and why they might not get a buyer, so take that unionists - is that the country has changed and wants healthier snacks. Also, there is a ton of competition in the snack market. Hostess will be missed for about a month, then people will substitute with whatever they can get at their local stores and move on.
