Hostess Brands is seeking to liquidate. Hostess Brands Inc., the maker of iconic treats such as Twinkies and traditional pantry staple Wonder Bread, said Friday it is shuttering its plants and firing about 18,000 workers as it seeks to liquidate the 82-year-old business.
The company, which filed for Chapter 11 in January, said it has requested bankruptcy-court authorization to close the business and sell its assets.
A victim of changing consumer tastes, high commodity costs and, most importantly, strained labor relations, Hostess ultimately was brought to its knees by a national strike orchestrated by its second-largest union.
The work stoppage, launched Nov. 9 by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union to protest a fresh labor contract, affected about two-thirds of Hostess's 36 plants. The striking workers, which number in the thousands Hostess said in court filings on Friday, were making it impossible for the Irving, Tex., company to continue producing its baked goods, Chief Executive Gregory Rayburn said.

It was as if a million stoners cried out in terror and then were suddenly hungry. I feel something terrible has happened.
obamanomics and labor unions
leading the way to stimulating the economy, one company shutdown at a time
But the good news is, Obama’s reelected, so they can eat four years worth of Hope and Change! Why they might even get a job as a scab at Wal-Mart for Good Friday!
Other companies will be making those brands soon, they will use their existing facilities. No need to buy up the union-laden ones.
Some of those fools really believed a new buyer would give them their original pay and benefits. They were that deluded.
Most will get between 40 and 73 weeks unemployment, differs by State, but the days of 99 weeks are over according to this site.
You should have seen the union dullards on TV here in NC, happy to sit on strike and lose their jobs, luckily the Dear Leader will rescue them
Those strikers will no longer have to worry about scabs crossing their picket line.
They’ll probably end up the same way of life when Obama’s
goodies kick in?
Unemployed and eligible for 99+ weeks of unemployment checks
Hmmmmm...believe Federal authority for 99 weeks of of unemployment checks ENDS/TERMINATES/EXPIRES this 31 Dec 2012
And what says MOOSHY OBAMA about all of this?
(sound of crinkling cellophane as she checks
her private stash of Twinkies and DingDongs hidden
under her bed in the White House Bedroom.)
The local Bakers Union here in Orlando sees the liquidation as a possible benefit. They are hoping that someone buys the plants and hires them.
I’m afraid there just aren’t enough stupid rich folks to go around.
Well, the homosexuals won this word fight, too. I mean, once no one remembers what a real Twinkie was they’ll only have the euphemism ‘twinkie’ to describe a homosexual.

What horrible timing, two states vote to legalize marijuana and they throw in the towel now?
This is clever!
Greedy Corporate Owners.
I pray that not one person in that picture ever touched any Hostess product that ever touched my lips.
I once had a good friend and we hung out a lot. I worked at a GMAD plant for two Summers years ago. I got him a job there and times were good. Excellent pay and very low expenses meant lots of partying.
My father was in management at GM but my friend bought into all the crap the UAW was peddling. He walked the pickets and developed a "Screw Management, I want more! Workers unite!" mentality.
He was like this up to the very day they closed the plant. I had since moved on to greener fields but he spent years there...spouting Union BS and getting sucked down into the drug culture that was rampant at the place.
Haven't seen or heard from him since. I've kept tabs on his ex-wife and hear tidbits. I believe the Union mentality had a large hand in trashing his life.
