Presidential Election Atlas Going Back To George Washington
Dave Leip's Atlas of Presidential Elections ^ | Dave Leip

Check out this Presidential Elections Atlas that will let you check final results state by state as far back as George Washington's presidency. This is a great resource.

This lets you quickly compare the actual results with the pollsters results going into the election, including RCP going back to the 2004 election.

Mouse hover over states to get a quick look at the percentage difference results, or drill down to the state and year and see county by county results.

Enjoy!

Nate Silver just tweeted that Obama has an 87.8% chance of beating George Washington.

I’m concerned.

Fun stuff.

For some reason he flipped the colors and indicates Blue for Republican and Red for Democrat.

LOL.

Washington owned the first 2 elections. I saw a great Bio of him on Netflix recently. Great American!

For some reason he flipped the colors and indicates Blue for Republican and Red for Democrat.

The color scheme wasn't always defined the way it is now with GOP=red, Dem=blue. Before the 2000 election, blue was Incumbent party, red was Opposition party. The press called GOP forever red after 2000. I think it's supposed to be some sort of subliminal thing against Republicans.

Very interesting data. I had no idea that FDR had such a stronghold on the deep south. In 1940 in South Carolina, 95% (!!) of the popular vote went to FDR over Wendell Wilkie. I’m reasonable certain Mr. Wilkie didn’t have to waste any money on TV advertising in SC. How times have changed....

The Civil War and Reconstruction was still very fresh. Heck I’m sure some of those votes in SC were from people that lived through the war. No Republican could have expected to win down there.

I remember seeing a Nast cartoon when I was 9 talking about the “Solid South” and though it was about actual hard ground not bloc voting habits.

For recent elections, they have a "what if" button that will show you how the election result could have been very different if only one or two states had gone for the losing candidate.

Also of interest are the "swing" and "trend" buttons, though I always get the two confused.

Leip didn’t flip the colors, he has the colors correct. The media deliberately “flipped” the colors for 2000 to disassociate the historic color of leftism with the Democrats. Think of the absurdity of “going Red” with going Republican. We need to take back the color blue for the side of the good guys. The Democrats have well-earned the red color of leftist totalitarianism.
