It would be easy for me to dismiss Obama supporters as mentally defective but for one inconvenient fact: my mother, sharp as a tack at 92, is voting for him. And so is my sister, a San Francisco attorney who is no slouch in the brains department. I’m not sure where my brother, a municipal employee, stands, but neither am I eager to find out. There is no bridging the political gap between us, and so we simply avoid discussing politics. The same goes for old friends, although newer ones are another matter. One of them walked out on our dinner together in a huff when an innocuous remark I’d made about Abe Lincoln evidently bruised his self-righteously liberal, morally perfect heart . Good riddance. It is far better friends than he that I am worried about. Will they draw the line when I let slip my support for the right to bear arms, even concealed? A few of my wife’s closest friends are unmitigated liberals, and it’s unclear how much longer we’ll be able to tiptoe around the political rough edges when we get together socially. I had to stop reading right there. Flawed premise. I don't know whether his 92 yo mother is still sharp as a tack or not. I suppose it's possible. But when we see that he thinks his sister is smart simply because she's a SF Attorney, and SF attorneys are probably 99% socialist...and we see his brother is a government employee - also largely liberal - it is easy to understand this is just a sad family of libs, and he escaped somehow.
I think the mom is set in her ways, which is not a sign of sharpness. I think the sis regurgitated liberal BS back to her liberal law professors - and may not be very smart at all. I just had to stop reading.
I agree with Ackerman- it will get ugly regardless of who the next President is.

It’s true. I find myself more and more unable to associate with liberals........at all. It is sad that things have gotten to this point, in a way, but it’s also healthy in another.
I believe that most libs simply don’t pay attention. They’ve been brainwashed, primarily by the media, into believing whatever those morons on the boob-tube feed them. I find that incredibly stupid and weak-minded.
The growing number of VOCAL Conservatives is evidence that more Americans ARE waking up to the realities of our country’s situation and are fed up. I expect, with FNC and talk radio and the Internet helping to spread the truth, that Conservative ranks will grow significantly. It’s time for some clear divisions to be faced, accepted, and dealt with. This country needs some soul searching, and despite the tensions, this will lead to innumerable exchanges (often heated) among our citizens. That’s not always a bad thing.

The divide between idologies is very healthy. Argue it out and then take a vote. No more unanimous consents and “comprehensive” bills that satisfy everybody and feed the beast. We’re spending a trillion and a half more each year than we’re taking in!
