Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin said today in Lee's Summit that he'll match his Democratic rival, Claire McCaskill, in TV ad spending in the race's final week.
At a stop in Lee's Summit, Akin said he no longer will be outspent 9:1 or 10:1 as he has in recent weeks.
"That ratio is going to change now," Akin said. "We have enough money to be able to do more advertising."
Akin is spending Tuesday and Wednesday in the KC area in what aides said would be his final visit to the area this campaign. At noon Tuesday, Akin and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich attended a campaign fundraiser on the Plaza.
At 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, the two will hold a "Standing with Courage Rally" at Union Station.
Gingrich said he was amazed by Tuesday's fundraiser.
"It is the first fundraiser I've ever gone to that spontaneously became a rally," he said. "When he (Akin) tells you that he has intensity among his supporters, I can personally vouch. I have seen it, and it is astonishing how dedicated they are."
McCaskill missed another day on the campaign trail Tuesday following the death of her mother on Monday afternoon. Her campaign gave no indication when, or if, she would return. A memorial service for Betty Anne McCaskill is scheduled for Sunday in St. Louis.
Asked if he had any regrets in this campaign for anything he'd said, Akin said, "There was at least one interview that I wished I had turned down."
That was a reference to the St. Louis TV interview he did in August in which he talked about "legitimate rape." He apologized later for his remarks, but the resulting media and political firestorm led to a chorus of calls for him to withdraw from the race, which Akin refused to do.
"On the other hand, we move forward and do the best we can at each point," Akin said. "When we make a mistake, say you're sorry and just keep on going."
Akin said he had a good sense of how the election will turn out "and I believe our supporters are going to be very pleased with the outcome."
A poll conducted for The Star that was released Sunday showed McCaskill leading Akin by 45-43 percent, totals well within the survey's 4 point margin of error.
Gingrich said Republicans who called for Akin's withdrawal "made a mistake in principle" and "made a mistake historically.
"And I think on election night when Todd wins there will be a number of people picking up the phone and calling to say, `Oh, gee, I really meant to be for you.'"
Gingrich defended Akin once again.
"If having made a mistake was grounds for getting off the ticket, Joe Biden would have to resign once a week," he said.
"And so I think Republicans shouldnt rush to set a standard that the vice president of the Untied States would have no hope of meeting. I think we should be honest about that."
He said Akin has a 12-year record in Congress as a solid conservative while McCaskill has a six-year Senate record of "representing Barack Obama's liberals.
"This state deserves to have a senator from Missouri and not a senator from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," Gingrich said. "I think its that simple and that straightforward, and Im very honored to be here to help him.
The Republican nominee would not be down by 2 if Todd Akin had acted appropriately and stepped aside rather than in the interests of his own ego.
It does not appear the GOP will capture the senate.
Sez you.
And the very reason the corrupt McCaskill will get beat by Akin in 7 days.
So what!!!!! Our own Republicans shot him down as much as the rats. Great thinking for such a small stupid remark. I have never seen so many totally ignorant stupid in the party as we have. Numb nuts, most of them. Why do you think we lose so much to lying rat faces.
Stepping aside would have been the wrong move and would have almost guaranteed a Dem victory.
I stand with Akin. And I appreciate Gingrich’s support for him, too.
“It does not appear the GOP will capture the senate.”
And the GOP establish and your ilk are responsible...NOT Todd Akin. Besides...you don’t vote in Missouri....so what you think is really irrelevant.
Romney had to disown him. No choice. He needs the independents, and wealthy contributors really look askance at this kind of thing. At the same time, elements of the GOP needs to quietly back Akin - it looks like a squeaker than he can win.
beyond that....I'll bet Akin has taken in quite a bit of cash just from we individuals...
That's good news.
Yeh he'd be down by 10 and more because the Missouri electorate would not support a candidate that they believe was chosen in some backroom deal by party bosses.
Those who just plain don't like Todd for various reasons. You don't have a clue what is about to happen to this country. We are facing the most evil administration in all history that if reelected and keeps control of the senate, will have the ability to turn this country into a full blown socialist and possibly communist republic. Do you really think that not voting for Todd and allowing the very possibility of letting the dems keep the senate is worth that? Even if Mitt wins, he needs the senate to defeat Obamacare and all the other evil legislation that Obama has sneaked through during the past 4 years.
Heres the bottom line this November:
If you want Obamacare repealed, you have to support Akin.
If you are against sex selection and partial birth abortion, you have to support Akin.
If you want to continue to keep and bear arms, you have to support Akin.
If you want two to four new Supreme Court judges who believe in the parts of the Constitution that are inconvenient to liberals, and who wont find hidden new provisions that miraculously support the liberal agenda, you have to support Akin.
Akin voted against the stimulous; voted to repeal Obamacare 30 times; A rating with the National Rifle Association; 100% pro-life; 100% from the American Conservative Union; voted against cash for clunkers; voted against the Wall St Bailout. STARK DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCARE MCCACKLES AND TODD AKIN! DO NOT FALL FOR THE MEDIA HYPE...SUPPORT A TRUE CONSERVATIVE THAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR OUR COUNTRY'S FUTURE.
Faith and prayer are more powerful than empty and negative rhetoric. We are in a war against evil right now and we are in it to win. Keep the faith my FRiends.

GO AKIN!
COME ON BIG MO!
Vote AKIN!
Second, if he had stepped down, the GOPe would have replaced him with the candidate of THEIR choosing - not necessarily the person who finished second in the primary.
And third, whoever the GOPe chose to run in Todd's place would not have received votes from many of his supporters (myself included) who wanted him to stay in the race because a) he won, and b) of his long-standing principles and conservative voting record.
Why do conservatives always circle the firing squads on our own? When will we learn to forgive and learn from past mistakes, and move forward into the future? I fear the 2012 election is our last chance to get that right.
Todd Akin for US Senate!!!
Just donated.
Me, too!
I guess your statement makes me a "Me-Too" Republican after all.
