Sandy shows the U.S. is unprepared for climate disasters

There are two main ways to respond to climate change. First, we can try to slow the rate of global warming by curbing our greenhouse-gas emissions. But there’s also “adaptation”—we can try to reshape our existing infrastructure to make ourselves more resilient in the face of climate disasters.

Many experts say we’ll need to do both.

The fallout from Hurricane Sandy has provoked at least a few politicians into taking adaptation more seriously. “It is something we’re going to have to start thinking about,” said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo after surveying the flooding in lower Manhattan. “The construction of this city did not anticipate these kinds of situations. We are only a few feet above sea level.”

You’re confusing climate with weather.

These people really believe storms like these are a new occurrence and could be prevented? They need to get over themselves. Mother Nature has always kicked our behinds.

Are you saying that current weather has nothing to do with climate?

Shempherd Smith just loves these big "disaster" events because he's the biggest drama queen on TV.

Between his constant editorializing while reporting, his inane asides, his irritating voice and his over-acting, I just can't wait till the top o' the hour when Bill O'Rudely comes on with his arrogance, interrupting and over-talking.....

Oh, wait, I think I'm going mad....they're coming to take me away, away.......

In the end, is there really anything we can do to prevent it? When it’s time to go, it’s time to go. Mother nature isn’t discriminatory.

Lost me on the first sentence.

We can prepare on the individual level for stuff, and maybe on the city/county level. But the country is too big for some grand Federal plan.

Beside that, the Feds tend to make a mess and use too much money.

Yeah, there were no such things a hurricanes before “Global Warming” started in 1580. I defy anyone to produce a satellite photograph of a hurricane which can be proven to have been taken before that date.

"Sandy shows the U.S. is unprepared for climate disasters ,p> Anyone who would make such a statement is guilty of spouting nuclear grade idiocy.

Maybe building a 100 foot tall barrier wall along the entire shoreline would do it.

Or making everyone move to locations at an altitude of at least 1,000 feet.

Anyway - It's Obama's fault - he promised to lower the seas.

But that's just another Obama promse broken.

A catagory 1 storm that was wide. It went ashore just as a cold front came in from Canada. So what!

If it had come ashore South of Galveston TX would anyone have noticed? This one came ashore in one of the most populated and built up areas of the US.

If a typhoon came ashore in Los Angeles just as a major earthquake hit and snow fell in the mountains while the LA hills burned, would we also blame it on glo=bull warming?

AND IT IS ALL GLO-BULL WARMING’S FAULT! sarc/off

Not so! When Obama got involved, the hurricane dissipated, the seas stopped rising and went down. ALL PRAISE HELMSMAN OBAMA!

Have we never had hurricanes before? This is really ridiculous to say that “climate change” caused this.

Climate change also cannot and did not cause the fact that other weather systems were also in the same area at the same time that this system absorbed into itself to make it stronger.

Something that would have happened regardless of weather or not there is climate change is not evidence of climate change’s existence...yet the left perpetuates this nonsense anyway.

Indeed—I take it as a positive sign for Republicans next week that the RATS are starting to beat the climate change drum again.

I’d more say that climate has something to do with weather.

Sandy was not even a Hurricane when it made landfall. Are they claiming we need to spend trillions now because of a Tropical Storm ? If this was a Cat 4-5 at its maximum and then remained a strong Hurricane when making landfall, they might have a point.
