Al Gore calls Sandy a disturbing sign of things to come, urges climate action By Ben Geman - 10/30/12 02:15 PM ET
Al Gore said Tuesday that Hurricane Sandy is a disturbing sign of things to come in a warming world and should prompt action to curb greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.
We must heed this warning and act quickly to solve the climate crisis. Dirty energy makes dirty weather, the former vice president said in a statement on his website.
Gore cited Sandy, which slammed ashore late Monday, and smaller-scale flooding in his hometown of Nashville two years ago, noting both storms were strengthened by the climate crisis.
Scientists tell us that by continually dumping 90 million tons of global warming pollution into the atmosphere every single day, we are altering the environment in which all storms develop. As the oceans and atmosphere continue to warm, storms are becoming more energetic and powerful, he said.
Gore also said that as Sandy approached the East Coast, it drew power from abnormally warm coastal waters and that the storm surge was worsened by sea-level rise.
Scientists tell us that if we do not reduce our emissions, these problems will only grow worse, he said.
Environmentalists and a number of scientists, as Sandy menaced the East Coast, have highlighted the nexus between global warming and extreme weather such as heat waves, droughts and powerful storms. (E2-Wire has more on that here.)
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) also sees the hand of climate change in Sandy, a storm that caused widespread flooding, power outages and a number of deaths in the Empire State.
Anyone who says there's not a dramatic change in weather patterns I think is denying reality, Cuomo said at a press conference Tuesday.
Cuomo said officials must take into account the new reality of extreme weather patterns, and that he recently told President Obama we have a 100-year flood every two years now.
There is no weather pattern that could shock me at this point, he said.
Cuomo said in the late-morning press conference that 15 people in the state had been killed in the catastrophic storm, and predicted the tally would rise.
Nearly two million customers are without power in New York state, according to an Energy Department report Tuesday morning, including what Cuomo said were 90 percent of residents on Long Island.
The storm created major flooding in New York City, where the stormwater poured into the subway system, shutting it down. The damage to the tracks, tunnels that are under water, is unlike this city has seen in decades, if ever, Cuomo said.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said parts of the subway system would be out for days at least, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Hey Al, didn’t your momma teach you not to use your mouth for breaking wind?
ROFL
these guys are MORONS!!!
SHUT UP GORE!!!!
any weather event that doesn’t fit their templet ... is labled... “just local weather”
any weather event that fit’s their templet ... is labled... “proof of global warming ! “
ROFL
Every time I see an article with ol’ Al sayin something stupid again, I have to say...”Millions of degrees”...LOL
Like clockwork...all you have to recall is the poster for his movie of lies with the hurricane image.
Chicken Little is exactly right-if idiot Al would watch History 2, The Science Channel, etc-or (perish the thought) go to a few archaeological sites on the internet, he’d see that evidence of weather events like this one are found all over this continent, practically every time a team of archaeologists starts digging, dating back 10’s of thousands of years, complete with the ruined remnants of trees, villages, and washed out shorelines.
We’re just smarter now, able to predict the weather better, so we can run away and not have half our tribe wiped out. No one was driving SUVs or burning fossil fuel then-what part of cyclical weather patterns do idiots like that not understand?
Wouldn’t it be great if there were a record that showed that there were monster storms hitting New York and New Jersey long before now? Wouldn’t that be great?

(The most fascinating one is the one from around the 1300s that they deduced from geological analysis. I wonder if Al wants to blame that one on the overindustrialization of the Lenape tribes. I’d like to see him try.)
They’ll use this in a coordinated effort to bring glow bull warming back into the news.
Shep Smith was just now talking about it — said, “Keep your politics out of my face.” I yelled back, “Keep yours out of my face,” and changed the channel so fast I’m sure Shep’s head was spinning.
Now that's climate change I can support!
That's a good ol' gork . . Now just play with all your pretty coins up there and pipe down or those mean men will have to come again !.
I remember during the Bush-Gore debates thinking to myself, ‘this guy makes Bush seem to be Cicero!’!

Thank you for posting that-it should be required reading for all news reporters-facts are wonderful things...
Just an observation-why have we not figured out in all these 10’s of thousands of years that crowding ourselves and buildings around the shoreline of the ocean isn’t the best way to avoid a major catastrophe?
I’d like to see the hard science about this. Unfortunately there is no true science any more. Even the scientists have gone liberal and use their “science” to prove liberal dogmas.
Manbearpig is real!
I was wondering what nature boy has been up to lately since he ditched Chipper. I guess he is the same con artist he ever was.
According to Accuweather this storm in not theresult of climate change.
I will take the word of the real scientists over the man who flunked out of seminary.
Heard that also, he just had to get it in, idiot!
Joe Bastardi said we’re in a cycle where more storms are going to be hitting the east coast. This will last for a couple of years, then we’ll revert to the normal pattern of storms hitting the southern and gulf states.
Funny thing is, in the 12 years that Al Gore been spouting his BS about Globull Warning, no one has asked him how to fix it, or when asked, he never gave an answer.
