Late season Hurricane Sandy churning poleward off the Eastern U.S. coast.
Sea Surface Temps
Buoy Data: Current Observations
Last night, I read a post about central PA, pointing out that the water has no where to go and mentioning the ‘38 flood. This morning on Drudge, there is another comparison to the ‘38 flood. My grandmother’s family were from a little town in central PA and I have a letter from one of her brothers, who was trapped in Renovo by the flood. The whole town was cut off, no way in or out. Food was air lifted and somehow he got a letter out, maybe after the flood receded. The letter said that another one of her brothers who worked for the RR, was hospitalized in Johnstown after a derailment.
So, I guess this is going to be quite a storm, more for the amount of water than anything else.
Based on the latest data, the storm surge values for New York City have been increased into the 12-14 foot level
Re: Breaking News Sidebar... I guess it’s appropriate then to launch a new thread: “Hurricane Sandy Landfall: LIVE THREAD” for storm reports, closings, damage, etc.
That’ll solve the problem.
No, it’s not nutty.... it’s showing the irony of how nutty the cries and the comments that came from the left when they blamed Bush for Katrina...

Chaser dude saying NYC Holland Tunnel to be closed at 2 p.m.
(Grrr... Feed interrupted by two political ads for the radical left-wing eco-terrorist-consorting NM senatorial candidate Martin Hinerich — ahead by 9 points in polls. NM even more than in the past an entitlement state.)
All the tunnels are closing down at 2 p.m. The bridges will be next. NYC schools will be closed tomorrow, too.
Thanks much for posting the link to that precious photo. May God continue to bless them.
NN, please start a new Sandy thread and put it into breaking news and frontpage news, and I’ll then lock this thread. Thanks.
That's the plan. Will have a new thread ready to go in about an hour.
What are those sharp pointy things at the end of their rifles? ;-}
Chaser guy says pressure down to 937 mb. Saying hurricane wind bands to hit NYC about 3 p.m. Storm surge may exceed 15 ft. Getting hyper again... CD sirens going off at his location, announcing need to move to higher ground... Tune to 1620 a.m. radio

I’m located 340 yards from Long Island Sound shoreline, in Milford CT between New Haven & Bridgeport, on the edge of a mandatory evacuation line. Not sure how long the power will last as winds are steadily increasing. It just started to rain sideways. We’ve got a 6500W generator and have photographed our posessions. The last high tide was about 1/2 hour ago and the water was less than Irene levels, but close. 12 hours from now will be a different story. Hi Sandy. Now go away!

You’re welcome.
Sorry it can’t be moved to the top of Breaking News but the software doesn’t allow it.
MAJOR H2O RESCUES UNDERWAY OF PEOPLE

Curious - can't verify that number, though the latest advisory (943mb) and aircraft recon message (946mb) are both bad enough. That'll move a lot of air around.
