Mega-storm threat growing for mid-Atlantic and Northeast early next week from hurricane Sandy
Washington Post ^ | 10-24-2012 | By Jason Samenow

...coastal regions from the Carolinas through eastern Canada are likely to get battered by tremendous surf and face a real risk of significant to severe coastal flooding. This storm will be a slow mover meaning large waves may pound the coast for lengthy time periods...Making matters worse, the storm will coincide with a full moon Monday night, meaning elevated tides above normal levels. Astronomically high tides have played a key role in historic coastal flooding events along the East Coast, such as the Ash Wednesday storm of March, 1962.

As one who is always willing to learn, I yield to your expertise.

It did seem to me, however, that there was a tempestuous (get it?) tendency to overstate the risks, wind forecasts, tide forecasts, resultant effects and the like.

“This Storm, I mean Storm Report, is brought to you by Giant Food. . . .”

I still remember that on-air goof on WTOP (for the non-Washingtonians, WTOP is the 24-hour news/weather/traffic station ) . . . .

Dear Sandy: please take your time traveling to New England. A driving rainstorm to keep people away from my doorbell on Halloween would be MOST welcome...

Too bad it can’t hold off until Nov 6th to keep the DemoRats home.

Rain and wind in blue states and major cities on election day would be the best weather ever... :-)

This hurricane could discourage all but the hardiest trick or treaters.

I surfed Montauk the last “Halloween” storm (later immortalized as “The Perfect Storm”). Relentless bombs lined up out to the horizon. Every break was closing out except the Alamo right at the point. Only four of us in the water. First and only time I ever got in real trouble in the ocean. If it turns that big again I will stand on the cliffs and watch.

Last year my friend, the police chief, was able to “cancel” trick or treating. I will bet he will pass that duty on to someone else this year. He took a boatload of ribbing for it during the last twelve months.

The local paper has announced that 'Trick or Treat' will be held on Wednesday, October 31; between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m.

Well, duh...

Last year; they needed a snow shovel...this year; rain gear and some weights.
