Another miserable FR Live Thread failure.

Yet again, FR fails the big LIVE THREAD test.

How does what is supposed to be the premiere conservative site on the 'net continue to fail?

I would have expanded on this except it took forever to get this simple post through the muck and molasses that we have to wade thru on night's like this.

Google doesn’t have this problem but FR doesn’t have Google’s budget either :-).

Maybe some computer scientist who is close to the guts of FR could explain what the big hold up is. Modern computers don’t usually wear out; they are overwhelmed. Usually on a night like tonight there’d be a whole gaggle of articles, let alone posts. On the other hand maybe Jim wants it to be a secret lest the enemy bollix things up even worse.

I'm not hysterical........ I'm drunk.

Well played buddy, it never occurred to the rest of us to drink during political Super Bowls and play-off games like debates and elections.

I couldn’t agree more. Lately, visiting FR is akin to slogging through quicksand. I’m getting sick and tired of the frustration it causes.

I’m a quarterly donor. I am sure something could be done. Another format for live threads, something like a chat rooms?

Alternatively, use of a distributed cache like memcache would probably make a big difference.

Indeed, all user authentication data and the most recent week of posts would probably fit easily in a few gigabytes of RAM. The challenge is how to architect access to it.

Yaelle , I tried for over an hour to reply to something you said on the “live” thread — both within the thread and as freepmail — to no avail. I can’t even remember now what it was,LOL. Extremely frustrating.... I am a frequent contributor and have to admit I’m getting tired of the endless problems during “important” times. Is it time for FR to accept advertising to help pay for whatever is needed to ensure enough capacity?

I’m a monthly donor. The site loads slow at all times, and I don’t even come here during high traffic - instead I just watch on cable and come back later to read the fallout.

I like the digest of news here, and I like the ability to voice vapid/inane responses without physical consequences, and I occasionally like the depth of insight of some of the analysis, but I suppose I do feel sorry for folks who have to rely on this site during high traffic, and who feel ripped off if they are donating and expect to get their money’s worth during such times. They have bought a solid work horse, but thought, perhaps, they were paying for a thoroughbred.

“We need to donate more so they can expand the server farm and get a fatter pipe.”

Actually they might try dusting off and re-installing the 2000 era servers and software. It sure worked better.

On the other hand we followed the same pattern here as during the last debate. FR was fine(No Slowdown) until we actually hit 9PM eastern time. Then it went out like a switch was flipped and it did not work at all. I am really suspicious that someone is “Shutting” it down with some kind of attack. Of course that would be John’s job to figure that out and put a stop to it.

"Maybe posters need to stop posting pictures, baseball scores and complaints about how slow the thread is. Just post what happens."

There were very few pictures posted on the V.P. debate thread tonight, and it was slower than the first debate thread, which had multiple graphics posted.

FR's failure during these crucial live events has nothing to do with FR's infrastructure...........

No, it is as a result of a misplaced punctuation mark.

Dumb ass cat.

Servers are tricky especially the web service. When a server receives a lot of web requests (port 80), there’s only so many that can happen at a time. Each time you click on the site, fresh, that sends another request. Since there’s not a multimillion dollar backing (i.e. twitter, facebook etc al.) with servers, load balancing and the such, the server can become quickly bogged down. And who’s to say a lot of trolls weren’t hitting the servers at the same time?

In the early days of FR, a group of us used to get together in an IRC chat room. We did that for quite a while, then it eventually went by the wayside. Got to meet a lot of great people through that chat room, and we all met in person a few times for FR events in Washington. I still keep in touch with a few of them.

The solution is that we avoid FR during times that are expected to have a high volume of traffic.

I wonder if the Sharks on ABC would buy into that business model.

I agree. FR magically went down when the debate started and just as magically came up when it was over. There had to be almost as many FReepers online just before and just after, so it shouldn't be strictly traffic related.

I agree with you that akamai/cloudflare aren't the right kinds of solutions, but once a page of posts fills out (gets to 50), it is static. It doesn't change, doesn't look different depending on who is viewing it. The pages here are great candidates for caching.

You are right that DB clusters and memcache would work. Even simple filesystem caching would probably work. A reverse proxy cache like Varnish would probably take some of the heat off.

You reek of Stephanie Cutter's .........

Blame a video instead of a policy, blame a misplaced punctuation mark instead of a lacking web site.

Are you sure you're not a stinkin' rat instead of a flea infested cat?
