WASHINGTON The State Department official responsible for security for American diplomats in Libya testified before a Congressional committee on Wednesday that the attack last month on the mission in Benghazi would have overpowered even a reinforced security detail.
The ferocity and intensity of the attack was nothing that we had seen in Libya, or that I had seen in my time in the Diplomatic Security Service, said the official, Eric A. Nordstrom.
Another witness, a National Guard officer who was temporarily deployed in the Tripoli embassy as the sites security officer, said that he became increasingly concerned about what he described as the weak security he saw in Benghazi on two visits there last spring and summer.
After declining for weeks to provide details about the assault on Sept. 11, the State Department on Tuesday night arranged with little notice a conference call in which a spokesman gave new details on what happened.
The account provided by a State Department official, whom the agency declined to identify, differed from the initial Obama administration reports in some important respects. Susan E. Rice, the American ambassador to the United Nations, had said that the attack on the mission began with an angry protest about an anti-Islamic film that was hijacked by extremists.
But the new account provided by the State Department made no mention of a protest. In this account, Mr. Stevens met with a Turkish diplomat during the day of the attack and then escorted him to the main gate of the mission around 8:30 p.m. At that time, there were no demonstrations and the situation appeared calm.
Little more than an hour later, there was gunfire and explosions. American agents, watching the compound through cameras, saw a large group of armed men moving into the Benghazi compound.

Bring Hussein and the Beast in and sit them down (if you can find a chair that will accommodate her arse) and make them sweat - they’re responsible! People died due to their incompetence (unless it was all a setup)! To hell with questioning underlings!
Nordstrom testified that “Private” security is not allowed in Libya. So, where were the Marines?!!111
Pathetic. A huge scandal is exploding on this, and the NYT tries to lead with a claim that increased security would not have made any difference.
The administration didn’t want to annoy his best buddies, and so he put the ambassador’s life in danger.
If it had been Bush, Bush would have been accused of doing it because “he hates gays.”
No way a President is going to go before any Committee. Fat Ass has already met with Congressional leaders. They did not believe a word she said.
Congress does not need The Chair before it anyway to get to the truth and pull it out of the subordinate Liars doing maximum damage to his hopes.
I’m watching the hearing. It’s fascinating. Turn it on. C-span.
Wouldn't a REAL president and sos want to be there anyway - just to see what really happened./s
I couldn’t have said it better! And as I’ve said before, both Hussein and Her Horribleness have blood on their hands.
It was a set-up; they allowed the murders since Stevens was a liability:
